Gophers/moles and Leach Fields

Can gophers/moles damage leach fields that use the chamber systems?

If so, what kind of damage and what to do to stop them? I assume lay traps and bait poison?

Unless you have a really shallow leach field, I would doubt it. Most of the tunnels are within a couple of inches of the surface, although their main nesting den can be three feet below the surface, but they aren't going to locate that in the damp of a leach field, due to the water and hydrogen sulfide.

Ground squirrels, woodchucks, badgers, or coyotes would be a different story. Our ground squirrels occasionally get deep enough to excavate up some of the drain rock, but so far, knock on wood, the leach field is fine.

The chambers are down a couple of feet from grade. I put landscape fabric on them before they were buried.
