Oil & Fuel gosh..darn .. ran out of fuel again

Have you ever not cleaned out your tank? What happens? My TN70A is very easy to do, but in 4 years it probably has never been drained (I bought it used a few months ago and I assume it was never done).

I started this practice many years ago after running my outboard out of fuel. I of course just plugged in my other tank and …. No go! After spending the better part of the morning cleaning fuel lines and filters in the middle of the Everglades and having to start my 70hp Evenrude by wraping rope around the flywheel (cuz I ran the battery flat!) I decided never to let it happen again!

I cannot say my cleaning obsession has saved me, but I am sure it sure has helped!

No-one around here cleans out the fuel tank unless the tractor is getting torn down for some reason. To clean out my fuel tank I think I would have to remove it in order to get all the brake parts cleaner out(or whatever I used to flush it). And is the brake parts cleaner safe for seals and fittings or for the poly tank itself?

To clean a tank I cannot remove, I just disconnect the fuel line from the bottom of the tank and let the cleaner run out. Brake parts cleaner will evaporate very quickly. A quick shot of compressed air will make sure it is dry.


I have yet to see any problem with seals or plastics, it is designed to be used on brakes and wheel cylinders.

I must have run my old B6000 out of fuel 10 times (it had no fuel gauge) and never had problems with “trash” in the fuel lines. For the 5 minutes a year it takes me to clean the tank, I think I will keep it up. If nothing else, it makes me feel good!

Nope, never run out of fuel and don't have the bad habit of going over 300 hours before changing a fuel filter. Mine will run about 14 hours on a tank,
