You guys are looking at it from your personal perspective, not the processor's. If people get sick and it is traced back to a processing plant, how you thawed and cooked your turkey doesn't count for much probably.

Also, if you thaw a turkey at room temp which provides ideal bacteria growing conditions, and it does grow a big colony of whatever nasty, when you open it up, clean it rinse it whatever, that contamination is probably going to spread to your counter tops, sinks, etc. Now, I know you guys are fastidious and all--Bird's coat in his avatar is always clean-- :laughing:, but just sayin'.

the warm water for poultry is a no no to? although I do it at least once a week I can grill some of the moistest cooked through chicken I ever had too, if I don't forget it n burn it up!!!

Anybody found them cheaper..? We also bought sweet potatoes for 38 cents a pound...Just curious about prices elsewhere..

We were in a Walmart yesterday morning and I noticed the turkeys were 68 cents a pound. This may be the first year in a long time, though, that I didn't have to buy one; a daughter and son-in-law are taking care of that this year.:laughing: But that Walmart had sweet potatoes for 20 cents a pound, so we had baked sweet potatoes with ribeye steak for supper last night.:laughing:

As I understand it, a lot of meats are contaminated with stuff like e-coli and salmonella in very small amounts. Poor handling and under-cooking allows the small amount that your body can handle to grow into a large amount that makes you sick. Thawing frozen poultry in cold water is okay as long as the water stays as cold as a refrigerator.

The two White House turkeys are local Rockingham County/Harrisionburg Virginia turkeys... Pardoned of course to live a happy life in a petting zoo somewhere.

The .49 turkeys were sold out last night. They had a sign up of another delivery for 8:00 am today. We bought a small higher priced turkey for 13.75.

Turkeys seem to be more expensive this year in general. Most grocers locally are $1.29 or more. There are some deals for as low as $0.68 (if you buy an additional $25 in groceries,) but I consider them "bottom of the barrel" and would avoid.

Just got home from the younger daughter's home where all the family met for Thanksgiving today. I don't know what the brand or price was but I think the daughter said she got the ham and turkey from Sam's Club. Anyway, she and her husband cooked the turkey in a Big Easy Oil-Less Turkey Fryer. It couldn't have been done any better; sure beats the 3 gallons of oil I used to use.
