Yanmar 1500D
I've been lookimg for a tiller for my YM1500 and happened to mention it at work. A guy that works in the same place but usually is on at different times than I am said that he had a tiller sitting in the back of his shed. Seems that he bought a small tractor a few years ago and it had a tiller attached when he bought it. He took it off and has never used it. Didn't know what brand it was and couldn't even remember what type of tractor it was way back then. Anyway, I went to loot at it and it was in in pretty good shape for it's age. Not beat up too bad, some of the sheet metal guard on the back bent, tines in fair shape, no evidence of leaks out of the gear box and it turns easily by hand. Said he would take $300 for it and I didn't even argue with him. Just paid the man and loaded it up.

Now I need to try and identify it. It has no MFG markings and the only numbers on it are stamped on the side (12091T).

I posted some pictures of it sitting in my trailer in the hope that someone can tell me who made it and if there are manuals still avaliable for it.

Here is the link to my pictures:

Looks like you got a bargain. Change the oil in the gearbox and the drive box, grease any zerks you can find and put it to work. My tiller is 5 years old and all I've ever done is lube it.

Thst is my intent. I would like to find a manual or some info on just what type/grade/weight oil to use in the gear boxes.

With no guidance to the contrary, GL5 85W 140 is probably a good choice.

About a month ago I bought a new KingKutter tiller from TSC. They threw in two quarts of 80W gear oil. The KK manual calls for GL5 85W 140. I used the "free" oil, but will change it out soon for the recommended weight.

The GL5 is what goes in the MFWD front axle, and the brush hog gear box. At the Deere store, seems like the 85W 140 is replacing the older 80W 90. Good luck and enjoy your new tiller!

Thanks Okie. I was guessing that it would take at least an 80W gear oil........but it was just a guess.

Ozarker,
I was going to edit my previous post to include one more comment, but got called away to watch a late night movie-Timeline. Anyway, in the meantime, you posted.

Just for information, my Posthole Digger calls for 140W gear oil, but all is turning more slowly in a PHD gearbox. So, my guess is lighter weight gear oil, or 85W 140 multi-vis will probably do the trick.

You're right. That is exactly what it looks like. Do you know if there are manuals avaliable? Do the same guys that sell YM tractor parts carry the tiller parts as well?

I think the Yanmar dealers will be able to get you most parts. Maybe post down in the Yanmar forum and someone will be able to answer this better.
