This all started over 2 years ago when I got the fill dirt. After a lot of fussing around the last couple months to get it level enough, I got my carport installed yesterday. It's an American Steel Carport (they are in Pioneer, Ohio). I got an 18'Wx26'Lx6'H sides (the inside height is over 9') for $887 including tax and installation. It only took 2 guys a little over an hour to install it. It's high enough that I can go in and out with the Boomer with the roll bar up, even at the edges. The long term plan is still to move it and use it for implement storage and build a pole barn on the site where is now. In the mean time, it will be a carport for my pickup. No more scraping ice off the windows in the morning!

Danny, did you have to get a building permit to put this up?

Mike - No. I went and asked and they said as long as it's not closed in, I don't need a permit. I could even have sides, which I might add someday. But, if I enclose it completely, then I would need a permit. I don't want to enclose it though, because when I convert it to an implement storage shelter, I want to have the large opening on each end to make it fast and easy to get in and out of.

Mosey:

Looks great! Sorry I didn't read your message soon enough to do you any good. However, my 12'X21X7' carport took me, my wife, daughter and son-in-law nearly a full day to install. "Professional" installers probably would have gotten it done much sooner.

I hope to use mine to cover my boat, once the wife gets her barn done, so she has someplace else to store hay. If we can afford it, I hope to make the barn big enough to also store the tractor and implements. Have to be careful about leaving them out too long, though, or the horse stuff will expand to fill all available space. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

OK, I have an idea now and someone stop me if it is a bad one. I'll need a barn/storage/wood shop someday, maybe 24x36. Could I save money by buying a 24x36 carport like Mosey's. Then later adding 2x4 walls and power? Seems to me the hardest part of a big project is getting the roof up and this steel carport does that part fast and easy. Am I nuts? thanks, bw

BrettW - I agree that a metal carport is a fast and easy way to get a roof up, but I don't think your idea would work out. Here are my reasons:

If the building is for a shop, the metal roof won't provide any insulation, especially for heating it in the winter.

The prices of metal carports like mine are very competitive compared to building the same size carport out of wood and using a shingled roof - as long as you stick with the common 18' width. If you go wider, the price shoots up fast!

I'm pretty sure that once you enclose it, you would need a building permit (I didn't as long as it wasn't enclosed) and I doubt the inspector would allow it. I was told the metal carports don't have any written specifications that an inspector can use to verify it would meet with the codes. But, if it wasn't out in plain sight and no one knew it was there ...

Casimir - "Sorry I didn't read your message soon enough to do you any good".

Don't worry about it, I would have ended up with what I have anyway, since the price was right and it turns out I didn't have the time to put one up anyway!

Mosey, Nice carport. I'm looking into one also.

By the way, what's all that white stuff in the background?

Just kidding, I had to do some shredding (rotary Mowing) this past weekend down here in Texas.

That "white stuff" in the background is solid winter sunshine in the Midwest
