Listen to J_J. You need a motor spool valve that lets the motor free wheel after the flow of hydraulic fluid is shut off.

I believe that the PT valve already has the ability to allow the hydraulic motor to wind down safely. It allows the fluid to recirculate through the valve until the energy is expended. You can use an open center valve, but it needs to have a float position.

I believe that some of the tractors can shift between cylinder spool and motor spool.

This valve from Northern tool is a motor spool valve with detents, allowing max flow. This valve will also allow reverse speed. For any other speed, you have to hold it in a position from neutral through detent position.

Welded our mini skidsteer plate onto your plate. Seems to turn the blades fine.
The question my partner has is, does it do harm to the motor on the brush hog when you turn off the hydraulic flow to the brush hog and it stops it abrubtly?
Thanks.

This is what 3RRL did on his hydraulic motor. A double cushion/relief valve.
