Got rid of hard start

Owned my 186D for 8 months now. Been slowly going through it. I know mine has been cobbled together many times in its 43 years. Many thanks to the search feature here.

Hard start with the Thermostart seems to be a common problem, mine was a bear to start.

As I was changing all the filters, mine had no fuel filter. As I was changing/adding, I forgot to turn the shut off valve on. Ran the tractor out of fuel.

Had to bleed the system. I don’t know if it cleaned junk out of the lines.

Benefit of having to do this, the tractor starts right up, 5 sec heating, for the past 3 months.

It probably has a screen at the tank shut off valve but I would, for sure, be adding a real filter.

The 187 has a fuel bleeder plug. # P-4060 I'm not showing it for the 186 but I'm pretty sure it's the same. It will be just below the fuel shut off Handle. Not showing any additional screens just the normal Fuel Filter setup. Hoye says it's not there on the 186 looking for it And Checked compatibility search. I'd look if it is there and clean and clear the lines?

When I bought my YM240 it had a lawnmower fuel filter where the proper filter assembly should have been.

I went to a VN 'Rebuilt' import house and bought the proper used filter assembly, taken off one of their warranty return tractors parked out back. Then I discovered this included a bowl and element that Yanmar had never used - a Frankensteinmar! No wonder that tractor soon became a warranty return.

In this photo the filter assembly, and the brand-new bowl and element, are what I got and what should be on your YM186D. This was used on most Yanmars in that era. (Ignore the shorty old bowl and element).

Yanmar's bleed instructions are to open each bleeder screw in turn until pure fuel comes out, then close it and move on to the next:

1) Filter inlet, the screw on the top left in this photo.
2) Filter outlet, top right.
3) Inlet at injector pump. (If you have to, that's near inaccessible on my YM186).

There's no shutoff or filter at the fuel tank. The handle shown here is what you close to change the filter element.

I came across that video trying to fix it.
The last minute (from injector pump to injector) is what got me up and running.

I think there was air or dirt in the line that was giving me the 30-45 second crank to start. No more playing with the decompression lever. Just start in 5 seconds.
