Got Rocks.....

Well - I don't think I can top Egons' rock - but I just added these pics on my website:

Big%20Rock_v2.jpg

'Course I couldn't lift either of these - but the fact I can move them around ("flip-rolling") is fine by me. The second one is a monster - was only @ 1/4 of it sticking above the surface - had a hole @ 15' wide to *get under it* enough to flip it out!

Cheers,

Dan

I couldn't lift any of mine either Dan. Just load the bucket with rocks for weight and hook a little higher on the three point so you get more traction. Just be sure the combination is right so there isn't a "Rizing on the Front." Your tractor could easily move what mine just tries.

Just for interest sake two of those rocks came up a 15 degree slope. Full throttle barely moving.

Whoa, that's one big sucker. They get that big and I just push 'em around. Makes a mess though.

So, what do you guys do with the spare rocks? For lack of something better to do with them, I'm lining a stream bed that goes through the middle of the place.

Rocks in use.
Defining two drainage ditches enclosing a too be flower garden and spaced so a vehicle can not get by to other parts of the land.

I use mine to line a graveled parking area behind my shop. Though, I haven't pulled out any nearly as large as some posted in this thread.

/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifConnecticut definitely does have more rocks than dirt! I teach a program at my nature center about CT stone walls, and all of the rocks that were provided by thousands of years of glacial erosion. For those who think moving them is tough, here's some fun numbers for all, from a time with no tractors...

CT has 20,505 miles of stone walls, enough to extend almost one time around the equator... and we're a tiny state.

New England and New York combined have a staggering 252,539 miles of stone wall, all built without the use of machines! According to one estimate, these stones would have been enough to build the pyramids of Egypt over 100 times.

All these numbers come from a book called Sermon's in Stone, by Susan Allport, where she quotes an 1871 census. If your interested, there's another great book called Stone by Stone, written by a friend and professor of mine, Robert Thorson. He also wrote a chidrens' book on the same subject, called Stone Wall Secrets.

All that being said, thank God for my BX23 to move them around my yard!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The rock project is finally over..... here is what it looked like, and now what it looks like after it was uncovered. The rest of the pictures are of the rest of the project, showing what we did with some of the rocks. Now the hard part comes, washing the rocks and getting the planting done before winter. This is one project that I am not looking forward to doing... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As you continue down the road, here is what it now looks like... All of the hill in the backround is what we in New England call ledge. After the rains wash it down, it will turn a natural grey color. This process usually takes about 2 years.

In this picture, there was a log of ledge behind the stones that we place to hold the banking. I wanted to preserve some of the natural look to the area. Once I have the laurel planted it will start to go back to its native state.
