Shredding with my TN95A. Went though a low spot and my right rear tire just spun. Stepped on the differential lock and still did not pull out, I pushed the 4x4 button and my left front tire spun.

I noticed I only had 2 tires spinning. One back and one front. I was able to get out of the muddy low spot by backing up and raising the shredder, but I am concerned that everything did not work properly.

The differential lock should have had both rear tires spinning. The front may or may not have had both front tires spinning. The differential lock would not release. I pulled up on it with my hand, and I backed up at the same time but it would not come up nor would it not lock the tires.

What gives? Any Ideas?

Have you used it previously? Have you used it recently? It is a good idea to 'exercise' all the levers, cables, actuators so things do not become frozen from no use. As for the behavior you saw, the rear has a diff lock that would lock the rear together to make both drive, but I'm not familiar with the NH models to speak to the front end.

I am not familiar with your tractor, but none of the smaller tractors I have operated had locking front differentials. So one front spinning may be normal.
As to the rear lock, from your description it sounds defective (but I suspect you know that). On Kubotas, you have to hold the dif lock down to keep it engaged and it releases with a spring.
Hope you get it sorted out.

Thank you for your replies.

I have had this tractor for many years. I have used it many times. It gets exercised often.

What I am asking is about the rear dif lock. Any ideas why the lever would be down in the dif lock position and the dif not be locked? Also why it would not release?

I know there are many experenced tractor mechanics out there.

Was your rear wheel spinning as you were engaging the diff lock? On my tractor when a rear wheel starts spinning you must take your foot off of the go pedal and stop movement then engage your diff lock and then back on the go pedal and then usually diff lock pedal will release on its own when it senses it is not needed.

The dif lock was engaged already when I stepped on it.

From deceased epic contributor, jinman: ..when you step on that pedal, it moves a shaft attached to a shifter fork inside the differential case. The shifter fork moves a "clutch" with four fingers to mate with the differential gear case and lock both axles. If the differential lock is engaged while the tractor is moving, those fingers can be damaged or bent. All you will do by forcing the pedal or shaft is to do additional damage. If you can't see something binding on the shifter shaft externally on the linkage, there is certainly nothing inside that is going to be cured by slamming or hammering on the engagement lever or shaft. Differential lock works smoothly or it is broken/malfunctioning. What you are doing by forcing the shifter is the same as trying to force a shift lever on a standard gear transmission. You will only make the problem worse internally or break the external shaft in the process. You will have to go into the differential and fix it or just live without differential lock. I'm pretty sure the former owner must have engaged the differential lock while the tractor was moving or turning and messed up the lock clutch fingers.

My Mahindra 1526 got stuck in a small ditch when I first got it. My diff lever did not seem to activate anything. Someone on this forum or another one I'm on suggested flipping off the brake lock and depressing the brake with the spinning wheel. I did, the other wheel engaged and I got her unstuck.

Sometimes when I have wanted to apply the diff lock with the wheels stationary it's not wanted to go in. Feels like it's just not meshing right. Moving the wheel that spins a little (and gently) will let it line up.
