yanmar ym1810
Well Spring is here and I am again trying to get my tiller back on. I know why every yanmar is sold with one, because no one is crazy enough to take it off....

I have a YM1810 and a 1300 tiller, I have to fight with that for hours and hours to try to get it lined up. The pto shaft has to be put on before I can get the tractor far enough back for the 3pt.

Is there any easier way?

Mine is the same way. The easiest for me is to line up the shaft and slide it on, then SLOWLY back up until I can get the arms hooked up.

Perhaps shorten the pto shaft. It should make life a little more pleasant.

When the tiller is all the way down........there is not much overlap left. If it's cut off.......won't work.

I'm puzzled. All the way down and almost no overlap. Should the shaft then not slide together far enough to be able to install it?

Mount the tiller first. Then slide the shaft on the tractor past where the pin drops into the grove. The other end of the shaft (compressed) will now be just short enough to let it slip onto the tiller. Now pull the shaft on the tractor back just a little and it will clip into place. Make sure the shafts are clean and lubed. Works everytime, or you have the wrong shaft.

Dave,
This shaft is the first one I've seen this way. There is on wider spline or so it seems. It will only go on when that particular spline is lined up.

I have the same kind of shaft on mine. I try not to have them fall apart. I also mark the two pieces so that I can tell how they go together. To hook up I connect the lower arms first, then the PTO then drive forward to roll the tiller so that the upper arm lines up. Having said that sometimes it takes minutes & the last time it took @ 1/2 hour. It's always easier with another set of hands helping.

Mine is the same way. The exact spline must be lined up with only one grove. Does the plastic sheild give anyone else fits during the final hookup? Everything is in the way, makes it almost impossible to line up. bw

The reason the exact spline must be lined up is because if they weren't the 2 cross bearings would be out of sync & would destroy the shaft & knuckles.
