When I did maintenance for a large apartment management firm, I bought those Sonin alarms for the sump pump pits to let us know when the level got too high cuz of bad pump or whatever. Yes, VERY cheap piece of mind.
I was just thinking about that last night. We occasionally take the motor home on a trip and turning off the water should be on my checklist of things to do. We do have wife's sister next door but a day of water running in the house could do lots of damage even though we have mostly marble flooring, the walls are vulnerable as well as the hardwood flooring in the bedrooms. I think I will make a checklist for my motorhome that includes shutting off the water to the house before leaving.Quite a few of my clients with lake houses or vacation homes keep the water turned off to their homes when they are not there. I have to turn it on when I need water, then off when I leave. It's very important to them because of flooding. I really need to do the same to my house when I go away for more then a day, but somehow, I never remember. I guess one good flood and you never forget!!!!
