Hi, all-

While using my backhoe this afternoon (BX-23 with 13 hours), I discovered a small leak under the tractor, inside the right rear tire, just forward of the axle.

It looks like perhaps a couple of ounces of whatever leaked out and it continues as a very slow drip (a drop every so often, not enuf to sit there and watch).

Could this be a hydraulic leak? I was fighting with a rock just before I noticed the leak. Could I have overdone it?

How do you isolate a hydraulic leak as opposed to a transmission leak?

More than likely it is a loose fitting. The best way to find them are to have some one hold each control to lock for a few seconds and you watch. When they are under pressure on the lock you can usually see that type of leak. Lots of times the tech will miss a fitting, it is normal. I know that it shouldn't be but they are very many fitting and they miss one once in a while. Just look, DON"T use your hand to try to find it.

And wear some eye protection /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif in case it sprays out.

Just a thought, could it be from an overflow because the fluid was hot after you fought the rock?
One way to track the leak down is to trace to the source using a white powder like baby powder. It will wash off when you are thru.

What does hydraulic fluid look like? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Does it look at all like transmission fluid?

Hogg,

Do you have the manual ?????? I think your tractor is all Super UDT from a central pump for trans and hyd supply.

I have a BX1800 with a front mount snowblower and had a similar problem with a hydraulic leak. I'm assuming that a BX23 has remote hydraulics similar to what I have. On mine, there is a block mounted near the rear axle with tappings for the rigid hydraulic lines. Mine had mpt to flare fittings that needed to be tightened. You might want to chek to see if you have the same setup. If you do it is easily fixed.

I have a leak on my BX22 front end loader conection for over 6 months. I am going on my third coupling. It is only one (1) hose that is giving me problems. It is the shortest hose near the support bracket where all four hose come out.

On your BX they are one and the same; transmission fluid = hydraulic fluid = power steering fluid.

The Super UDT is as clear as water. (Just pull the dipstick on your HST and put a drop on your finger to see what it looks like.)

Take a look at your Operator's Manual for the appropriate precautions to take and procedure to follow when looking for a leak!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Had a similar problem last year. Took my B7500 to the dealer and I had put too much hydro fluid in when I changed my filter. WAY too much. They drained the system until the fluids were at the proper levels and the problem was solved.

When I added fluid I had my FEL all the way up...figured that way all the tubes had fluid...well, it's gotta go some where when the FEL goes down.
