I have a 1020 Hydr 2wd and it seems as though it does not have a governor. I really notice this if I have a pto generator hooked up. Set it at rpm and as more load is required it does not make any attempt to recover or compensate for the added load. Same thing while mowing, if run into heavy pulling I either have to slow down or add more throttle. It has done this since new. Also have two other 1020s in the family and they are same.
Not a big issue but was just wondering. I don't believe the service manual shows any adjustments for the pump but I may be wrong. Shows it to be a Toyosha ( HINOMOTO ) engine with a Diesel kiki injector pump.

I know very little about the 1020s. They would have had a governor. Question. Is there a chance that what you are running on them is on the marginal size of too large?

I’ve definitely been know to do that. I suppose it could have a governor, but it seems to me that it should make more of an attempt to keep up than what it does. I’m just comparing it to other types of equipment I’ve ran over the years. You know, how when you really get to working a machine and it starts to pull down, they will most likely create more smoke as it applies throttle its’ self ? The Masseys don’t seem to even try. At least these three 1020s.

Like I say, it’s not really a problem. I was just curious. But if a simple adjustment was available I would sure try it.
Thanks

That doesn't make any sence that they wouldn't. I know three different people that have that model. I don't see any of them very often, but when I do I will ask them. I know that the 1200s, 1400s and 1500 do have a governor and it works as they should.

Thanks Jerry. Another problem I have been battling for several years is my hydro makes a lot of noise. Even more so after it gets good and warmed up. Also has a great loss of power to the ground when warm. For example going up a grade in high range that is no problem when I first start out but after maybe an hour or less of working I will have to shift to low range to go up it. Also makes a horrible noise like air in the system.
I’ve posted here before and had different suggestions made i.e. changing to Synthetic fluid and checking for blocked lines etc. I have not changed fluid yet but was studying the service manual on the hydro pump. I’m kind of wondering if possibly the charge pump isn’t supplying the hydro pump properly therefore starving its’ self. Manual explains that there is a normal loss of fluid from pump to motor within the hydro unit and that the charge pump is required to make up that loss.
Any thoughts on this theory anyone ?

Thanks Rick

Have been reading in the manual and this tractor does show a governor. It also has what they refer to as the (spelling is correct) Ungleich device. It shows some adjustment is possible. Seems strange to me that all three of these tractors would not have been set properly at factory. My guess is that they are just not as responsive as I would like. My dad’s and brother’s operate just like mine. I also have another brother with a Ford. Not sure what # but around same HP rating as ours and his tractors’ governor works very well.
Maybe I’ll monkey around with Ungleich adjustment. Was just curious if anyone else had experience with this particular model.

It could be several different things that could be wrong. What hydraulic filter are you using?

I can't recall part # off top of my head but the suction and pressure filters are both Massey parts. I was going to link to another post where we talked about kinked lines and restrictions etc but that post was about the cab I built. Didn’t know if it would be appropriate to do that.

There have been times that other brand filters have been used that have caused flow problems. Since you are using the MF filters you should be fine there. I would also assume from reading how you take care of the tractor, that you have also cleaned the suction screen, if that model has one?

Not sure if it has a suction screen but if it does, it has not been cleaned. I have had most all of the lines off and inspected and have not seen a screen anywhere except where the oil re-enters the case on the bottom right side. Been a while since I had it apart but I sort of recall a cone shaped fine screen there. At that time it was in good shape and clean.
Been really hesitant to tear into it again until I have a strong suspect area to look. After reading manual, the charge pump makes perfect sense but when I checked all pressures last time, everything was within tolerance.
