Tractor
IH 444
Have a question maybe someone can answer. I had the governor rebuilt last fall on my IH 444 gas tractor, it was redone twice and works good enough for me to mow with it. Here is the main issue, ever since it was rebuilt I have no throttle, it's either wide open or nothing, I can throttle it down if I hold the lever up in the idle or mid range but as soon as you turn it loose it goes back to wide open throttle. I've had 3 people work on it as well as the case dealer but still not fixed.

There are two adjustment bolts on it one at top and one at bottom, I know the one at the top adjust the high end rpms to keep it from over revving. Does the bottom bolt adjust the low side and would it free up my throttle linkage? All the linkages are good. I didn't have this issue until the governor was rebuilt. Before the work you could set the rpms to any range and the throttle would stay put.

Could use some help on this since non of these tractor guys seem to know how to fix it. Thanks!

Did you unhook the Gov. to carb. linkage rod, from the carb.? If you did, when you hooked it back up, did you put it back on from the back side, so the cotter pin that keeps it in, is towards the outside..?? If so, it needs to be taken off, and inserted from the outside in, with the cotter pin side towards the block.

If it's from the backside in, the rod is binding on the block, and there is enough resistance until the Gov. pushes it hard enough to go to wide open throttle.

I could be wrong, but have seen that done. Don't ask how I know... ;)

DJ54 thanks for the reply, all the throttle linkage is on correctly and it moves freely when it's not connected to the governor. With everything hooked up the throttle wants to stay wide open.

When you start the tractor it jumps to full throttle. Only way to idle it down or to slow the motor down you have to manually hold the throttle by hand, as soon as you take your hand off it jumps back to full throttle. It's like the governor is adjusted to tight. I'm just not sure if the screw on the bottom side of the governor adjust the low side of the rpm range. I know the top screw adjust the upper rpm range of the governor to keep it from over revving the motor. Guess if all else's fails I will grab some wrenches and loosen it and see what it does.

Thank you once again, I may have to tear into it myself. I had a guy rebuild it after it broke the 1st time, just didn't have time to tear into it myself and I've done quit a bit of mechanical work but have never had to work on a governor on any of my tractors. It broke again a week after the rebuild, it had a pin break and broke the ears off the weights. He got another set and put in it, he did bushings, springs, weights and a new lever/rod in it also.

He thought linkage was binding but that isn't the case, I've had it all loose and it moves freely. I took it to the case dealer and they replaced a bad seal in the steering valve and readjusted the governor but couldn't figure out why it was doing what it's doing. I got so frustrated I went and picked it from them. Not one time did they remove the assembly to check all the parts in it. Ugh! My yard was knee high and wife was getting a little out of shape when the snakes started using the yard for their happy hunting grounds lol.

Most of the tractor mechanics I've talked to didn't want to touch it since it was a governor issue? Guess there aren't many old timers around that have worked on these old tractors.

You'll be surprised how simple they are to work on, once you get it apart.

Always learary of things with springs and bearings, I'm always afraid it's going to exploded into parts when removed lol, goes back to my childhood of taking things apart  Thank you for the info, maybe a few weeks before I can work on it. Have been working 6 days a week.
