We have gps in our service trucks. They shook two bad apples out of the tree but there is no way it justified cost. Then in an attempt to recover cost it became micromanaging. Management became so concerned about it they were not doing their jobs. Now we have a lot of demotivated good employees with no leadership. GPS is not a bad tool it's the way people power trip it that consumes them and hurts companies. Just don't lose your mind with it.

I pay my crew leaders $13-14 per hour and give vacation, sick and personal days off. I also give paid holidays, and a bonus at the end of the year based on employee performance, and net profit.

I don't have numbers on profit per employee, but I can tell you that my net profit is about 10% of gross sales. And I can tell you that payroll is about 42% of my total expenses.

I know this is a discussion for a different thread, but.....

I pay my people what they are worth to me.
If they would:
1. show up on time
2. show up every day
3. take care of my equipment
4. learn how to do a good job
5. get a driver's license
6. not fight with each other
7. shave every day
8. not smoke and throw cigarette butts all over my yard, and my customer's yards

Then I would, and could afford to, pay them more. I could easily double my business if I could find good workers.
Are your crew leaders the empolyees not following the above posted rules? How much do you pay the regular employees per hour?I assume less?I can see if that is the case they do not care about you and your company profit.Good luck on your GPS tracking venture I am sure it will make you a profit.

My daughter worked at a hospital and they were tracked (badges have RFID). If the supervisor wants to, they can tell where each employee is at all times (or at least their badge location). It gets interesting when employees are abusing the lunch and break times, especially now with fewer resources to get the same or more work done. My daughter looked at it as positive and did not worry much about it, but she is one that does not abuse the rules. Others hated it and would leave their badges at various locations to upset the supervisors. The hospital had to stop tracking after the union got involved with some issues. I am guessing the next union contract will include tracking so the union cannot interfere.

I don't agree - every summer in college and when i first got out I worked for the township Schools mowing/brush hogging/ etc... I made a little over minimum wage but I showed up every day, worked ALL day, was never a minute late and never abused anything (ok not on purpose - I did get turned lose on a lot of eqpt with NO training and made some mistakes but NEVER once on purpose.) I was glad to have a job every day, one that would let me take a day off if I really needed it and were nice to me. They didn't give me paid time off but that was fine at the time - I think a LOT of it has to do with the people and there expectation to be given a high paying job - it is cutting grass, I doubt he can pay his guys 50K a year, not if he wants to make any profit or ever have prices anyone would pay. With all the pill heads I am sure he is working hard at getting good employees - I have to carry a work cell phone all day every day, I know they can track it, I personally don't care. If you are not abusing the system there really is very little to worry about as an employee....

That's my point = you get what you pay for.Don,t expect drug free dependable employees who are willing to show up on time and follow rules. They don,t give a rats behind this day in age about rules, they will drag up and find another low paying job because the don,t care.If they have enough money for a six pack, cigarettes, and a bag of weed they are content.Very few employees this in age have enough grit in there arse to even care about there job.

You don't magically get what you pay for. Give lazy people more money, and they get lazier. You get what you can out of people. If they think they are worth more, and another employer agrees with them, they are free to leave. I am in favor of paying what people are worth, but a good laborer is still Just a laborer and not magically worth $12+ per hour. Wages don't increase work ethic, although they certainly can decrease it if below prevailing for there job. I don't like what I am currently making, so guess what, I look for a new job.

Before you feel sorry for his guys remember, the worst that can happen to his guys is they get fired, and paid for the hours they worked that day, no matter what wrong they do. These same employees could very well cost the OP a lot of money. If they wreck the truck, guess who gets sued, not the driver, but the owner...

What business is this of yours? Its his business and he can do as he pleases. If you don't like it don't work for him, plain and simple.

He makes the rules. That is the beauty of being the owner and boss.

Well know at least your finally honest about your intentions.

Suggesting that he wasn't being honest before is both pushing the limits of forum rules, and quite possibly completely wrong. You think it's impossible that this thread made him think about things he hadn't thought of before, or that he learned a few things along the way? Other people mentioned things like stop reports, etc, that could ave sparked an idea....

Hey, let's just start out with the assumption that someone is lying, and then call them a liar, just because it's a topic you don't like.

Personally, I can't stand lazy employees, because I've had to make up for their lack if work for ages.....maybe I should suggest that people defending them, by attacking employers looking to fix the problem, are on the side of lazy employees....bet that would go over well.
