BX25
I'm a new member here (great info and advice I've been reading, BTW). Soon I'll take delivery of my first tractor, a Kubota BX25. I'd like to ask for some advice. I live on about an acre. I have several plans in the works for my new toy. First, I have a stone driveway that needs rehabilitation. I also have a large yard my three big dogs have teared up. So I'm looking for the right implement for both grading my driveway and tearing through the existing grass in my yard in preparation for grading and seeding. I've been looking at implements such as the Land Pride GS1548 Grading Scraper and the Land Pride BB1548 Box Scraper. I seem to think the Grading Scraper would be better at ripping up the yard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you would get more use out of the box scraper. Since you only have a acre of work, a box scraper is more useful after you are done with those chores as a counter ballast if needed.

If you do choose a land pride box scraper I would suggest you consider the BB0548 instead of the BB1548. The BX is a scut and the 05 series is sized appropriately for SCUT tractors. The land pride 05 series is similar to the Woods Estate series. The land pride 15 series would be a better match to a B series tractor. I also suspect the GS1548 is a little much for a BX. It is 437lbs and hangs 50 inches off the back. That may be a struggle for a bx to manage. I'm pretty sure it will lift it, I'd be concerned the implement is a little big for a scut.

A scut sized box scraper is what you need. The box scraper will tear up the yard no problem. A landscape rake can also be helpful in prepping for seeding.

Get the Boxblade for a SCUT which is some times called and XB model and a RatchetRake for finishing out for seeding.

I highly recommend that you read this thread from beginning to end. There are numerous other threads on the subject, however this thread is the most comprehensive.

I have a box scraper and a grading scraper. I would recommend against trying to get one implement that does both jobs. The box blade is not the best implement for your road; it is complicated to use on a gravel road, especially with a BX. The Land Pride grading scraper is totally idiot proof. For tearing up the grass, a box with a set of small rippers and a removable blade will allow you to to rip the roots. A sub-soiler or set of discs can also do that. I assume you are going to scrape the upper grass and roots away and put in new topsoil. A rototiller followed by a drag screen are really useful in prepping the soil before laying sod or hydroseeding. You might just rent the things you'll need only once on the yard and plan on keeping the grading scraper long term for road maintenance.

Just thunkin' here;
How would a box scraper work out as a grader if it got a couple of longer outboard side plates bolted onto it ?
With skids on the bottoms of them of course.

I'm thinking maybe 5 ft or so long and however deep you want, perhaps 18 inches ?
Round or taper the skid ends to ride up and avoid digging in, etc.

Maybe 4 to 6 bolts for each one, put 'em on, take 'em off as needed.

If you can do any equipment modification/fabrication, the following link shows a tool that works well for me for many different jobs.

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/116235-r-blade-upgrade-x4.html

This implement started life as a standard 5ft rear blade. To the basic unit I added adjustable gauge wheels for grading, and removable rippers and end plates to convert the rear blade to a box blade. All upgrades are separately removable which allows the implement to perform a wide variety of tasks.

One note on the lift height of this blade. It is a stock King Kutter blade and did not raise very high when attached to my BX23. The problem was solved by cutting off the lower arm pin attachment plates (the ones on the main beam of the BB) and rotating them 90 degrees downward. This increased my raised blade height from about 8" to 17".

RedDirt,

Don't know how I missed that when you posted it in 08, but it is absolutely ingenious. You should patent this thing and market it. I'd buy one.

Well thanks Tom.

For some reason the thread did not get as much viewing or response as normal so I have referred to it a couple of time since because it makes an otherwise mundane too a real work horse. I have since used it in many different configurations and I am really pleased with the performance.

Since it converts to a 5ft box blade it is a bit large for the BX when all four rippers are engaged but the gauge wheels are then a huge help to keep the cuts light.
