Alright... I'm going to side with those that took the science path during my formal schooling days.

Dang, I can't believe you, Dargo and others can still recall and break down the rules of sentence structure and all that other "stuff" (like Dargo's list of prepositions). I need to turn on the TV more... I've heard "School House Rock" is back on. I need a refresher in English. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That's the one that still triggers an involuntary knee jerk with me, Bird. (Keep in mind I was raised by a language teacher, and I had to learn the rules.) I mostly see it on TV, where, say, some Harvard-educated political yahoo is trying to impress us with his lofty speaking abilities. "It was the best thing for my wife and I", or "there's no reason the focus should have been on my partner and I".

If my poor mother were alive today, she'd banish them to object-of-a-preposition ****. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

When I was finally old enough to speak to Mom more or less as an equal, I used to delight in deliberately using a preposition to end a sentence... with. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Nowadays, I just have fun with words. Speaking plainly and correctly is just plain boring. As we've observed on this forum, folks understand what you're saying jes' fine, as long as what yer sayin' makes any sense at all. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I agree with you Bill.

There are plenty of times when I read through a post and start to think about how badly it's worded. But then I try to remind myself that the poster isn't doing it on purpose and in fact is really only thinking about what information (s)he is trying to communicate to other readers.

That being said, the one that always gets me is the use of the word irregardless . I don't believe there is any such word. The good old plain regardless is the word that should have been used. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi everyone! I think I need to start checking TBN at work. I'm missing out on too much.

Three things that irritate me--

1) When did "upped" become a word? As in, "Our budget needs upped to 10,000 dollars next year." The correct word is "raised".

2) This is not the correct usage of the word "times"...
"If you times 23 and 10, you get 230." When did we quit using the word "multiply"?

3) You add "s" or "es" to make most words plural. Adding an apostrophe and "s" shows possession, but it does not make a word plural. For example, I have one box and two boxes. "Box's" is NOT the plural form of "box".

I feel much better now! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
