One of my pet peeves (I have many such) is breaks and brakes. It can be pretty funny sometimes, such as when someone writes, "I stepped on my break and it was broken. I prayed for a brake, but I hit the tree anyway." There will be those who read this who will not know what was wrong with it.

I don't have any handy hints for remembering which way is correct. Sometimes it just takes a little effort to learn these things.
