MF 35 FEL 2wd loaded R1
did some work today that I had always done with my old mf 35 cleaning my horse lot . I back drag all the old hay and manure into piles then push these pile into one. I have always been amazed at my MF 35's ability to move in this mucky mess I used it like loader and dozer all at once. the piles are thick wet muck that are very heavy. It never once couldnt lift the bucket full even gettin light on the rear wheels.

L5740 FEL (la854) R4 4wd unloaded tires
today for the first time. back dragging with the bucket went good as long as i didnt lift the front tires.
Once I had my piles i started pushing them into one. Had all 4 tires spinning and couldnt push. Backed up for a running start was able to move them. Once together I tried to lift and push into big piles. The loader wouldnt Curl a full load it wouldn't lift or push the way the old mf would . i never felt the rear getting light. Tried lifting the bucket some but it still wouldnt "flip" the load. If I backed up and set the bucket to go in low I couldnt fill the bucket

How do I test my loader functions it seems very weak in the curl operation?
i have lifted full buckets of gravel but did have had similar problems digging out a root.

My MF 35 If I tried to "breakout" something with the curl I would have to stand on the brakes in order to not get pushed bakwards. The L5740 just sits stationary and doesnt get pushed back is this right for this model

How long have you had the tractor?
These are not heavy tractors and with R4 tires have really poor traction in my opinion. These tractor needs a lot of weight to make it do any kind of pushing or lifting. As for the loader function, they seem to come from the factory with the pressures set about 1000psi low. You may want to get that checked to confirm and if it is low get it put to spec and then you will really need extra weight to hold the back down:)
You may want to consider R1's. They will help immensely.

I don't know if this is normal or not for your model! I have a L3540 and am experiencing about the same thing of the lifting problem as you but haven't taken time to check it out!

kuboman has put his finger on exactly the right things:
bring hydraulic pressure up to spec
weight on rear (mandatory for safety )
different tires for traction

the first two will unquestionably resolve your lifting concern, imho

Just as kuboman said check the hydraulic pressure. I checked my L4400 and found it was 400# below spec set to spec and all was good with the FEL but you will need to add rear weight.

I bought the L5740 new in Sept 11

I realize I may need to load the tires and I dont really expect the same traction as a loaded 2wd r1 but i was hoping the 4wd would make the difference. Buying r1's are not an option

How do I check and adjust the pressure?

I built my own gauge. I got a 0-3500psi gauge and mated it to a female coupler that I connect on the down cycle for the loader. Makes checking quick, clean and easy as I just disconnect the down hose of the lift cylinders connect on the gauge and start up push the lever to the down position and read the pressure. Mine was steady at 1600psi which is 1000psi low. Make sure you place your loader on the ground and relieve all the pressure before starting.

Loading your tires will help but I think you will want weight on the three point. I have 360# of cast on my wheels plus 1400# of cast on the 3pt and I need every bit of that when I max out the loader.

You are about the only person I can remember saying their LA8xx loader was weak... they are a very strong loader. The curl on mine will lift the back end of the tractor with an 800 lb implement on it if it gets hooked on a large root or boulder. If yours does not have that kind of power, something is wrong with it...the pressure may be low, as noted, or there may be some other problem in the hydraulics. First off, be sure to check all the quick connects; sometimes a coupler can be not seated properly. When it's working properly, you will absolutely need as much weight on the back as you can find. This tractor is designed to have weight on the back when using a loader. Owners manual will say that loud and clear. At the very least you want something heavy on the 3pt... filling the tires will also help.

Is adjusting the hydralic pressure something I can do?

I agree I am suprised as I have read nothing but great things on this loader.

So if I stick the bucket in the ground and try to curl/dig it should lift the rear end without having any trouble?

Having ballast or loaded tires doesnt effect curl or breakout if the load isnt being lifted enough to effect me without it now

I know about having ballast and I have a box blade with weight added when I have alot of loader work to do. I am hoping that for my needs I can get away with not loading the tires. the jury is still out

Unless we are just going to use a tractor for bush hogging/finish mowing on flat land, we load the tires whether Ag, Industrial or Turf.

My L5030 will lift the back of my tractor using curl or lift with 1000 on the 3PH, so as others have mentioned something is wrong.
