I am looking to purchase a 3830 or 4330 with FEL. I cannot decide on HST or GST, I would like some help. I think the GST would work better. Everyone here seems to prefer HST. I am going to test drive each but I don't think I could decide with a 5-minute test drive.

As had been said so many times before but is always worth mentioning again, it will certainly depend somewhat on your uses for the tractor, for all around use, you will be hard pressed to beat HST. Why, well, many reasons, but HST will give you control like no other transmission. Be it speed control in the way of speed up/ slow down, forward/reverse response, to automatic tractor stopping when the pedal is released. The GST will give you precise ground speed control under a given load as well as a little better PTO HP. If my use involved pulling a set of rippers for hours on end, I would opt for the GST or a manual transmission, for general mowing, loader work, and general utility uses, your going to find HST having a distinctive advantage. I use a International 454, at least I did until I got my HST. On a orchard I do some work on, we use a JD 5500 with a manual transmission. A powerful tractor, but it's use is for straight ahead work with very little need to use reverse. It pulls a 14' mower. I don't know of any HST tractors that could do that.

If you are going to be going a steady speed for long periods of time I would get the GST. If you are going to be stopping and slowing up and backing up I would get HST. HST is a lot easier as far as mobility. The GST is good for set speeds. I have owned both and like the HST better. It all depends on what you are going to use it for.

Those are two very good tranys. I plow with my compact about 50% of the time so I went with the GST after test driving both. I like the control the gears give me. The HST has a cruise control for field work too, but I didn't like the "feel" of it. I like having the old gas (diesel) pedal and lower rpms while traveling. At work I have used HST types and they are great for loader work and thats the only time I wished I had HST.

Go with the one You like the best. GST for field work, HST for all around use. The HST is the favorite on these forums by far and is probably the best all around choice for most uses. The price is really to close to matter. And you can always buy both /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think Shamus has it down pretty well and his use certainly validates his decision for selecting GST or even a standard manual for that matter, but the GST gives all those gears without clutching. I would disagree however on the cruise control, the Kubotas cruise control is so simple, easy and has a very good "feel" to it. I haven't seen anything simplier or easier to operate. It also allows you to use differential braking should you ever have a need for it, I have yet too have that need.
Haven't I seen this post somewhere else?
