As had been said so many times before but is always worth mentioning again, it will certainly depend somewhat on your uses for the tractor, for all around use, you will be hard pressed to beat HST. Why, well, many reasons, but HST will give you control like no other transmission. Be it speed control in the way of speed up/ slow down, forward/reverse response, to automatic tractor stopping when the pedal is released. The GST will give you precise ground speed control under a given load as well as a little better PTO HP. If my use involved pulling a set of rippers for hours on end, I would opt for the GST or a manual transmission, for general mowing, loader work, and general utility uses, your going to find HST having a distinctive advantage. I use a International 454, at least I did until I got my HST. On a orchard I do some work on, we use a JD 5500 with a manual transmission. A powerful tractor, but it's use is for straight ahead work with very little need to use reverse. It pulls a 14' mower. I don't know of any HST tractors that could do that.
