Well, a few years back I got so tired of trying to blow the leaves back into the woods I bought one of those aftermarket powered tow behinds out of frustration. I looked at the Swisher and a few others but was concerned the 5 HP just wasn't enough to pick up thick, wet leaves - or the soft sides wouldn't last long, etc. So in the end I ponied up $999 on sale for the Agri Fab Mow-N-Vac 8 HP
Chipper/Shredder from Northern Tool.
Let me just say that I really had a hard time laying out that kind of dough, but in about two hours I realized I would never fear fall clean-up again. In fact, I absolutely would not want to be without one again. I used it with a JD GT275 48" deck for the past few years and it works amazingly well. Holds an incredible amount of shredded grass, leaves, tennis balls, dog bones, you name it. Even had a lost trailer ball nut go thru it! Will suck a years worth of pine cones and wet needles right out of the thatch in one pass set at 2-1/2" height. I had the grass catcher bags on the JD for a while, but it meant WAAAy too many trips out to the compost pile to empty. This thing is a real time saver. Lots of capacity, it goes and goes and all the shredded matter is about fingernail sized small! Haven't used the
chipper much 'cause we get trailer loads of free mulch from the town highway dept., but it will handle notably larger diameter than the typical garden store
chipper. The heavy, heavy duty blades are very apparent when you go to pull start it!
Just in case you can't tell, I don't ever see myself going back to a low capacity rear bagger system. I do see that the price is up a fair amount from what I paid, so my only advice is don't cheap out on the higher HP models. In the end, HP is what makes you happy!
