I recently bought a B7100DT with front loader and 4' shredder. I live in the country, and over the years dirt has blown in over the lawn, now it is about 3 inches higher than the sidewalk in places. My question is will my tractor handle the removal of the grass, and which is the best method? I don't have a blade, but I think I would be best off to try to drag a blade than to push the loader. If anyone has had a similar project, I would be interested in knowing what works best.

I tried a small area with the front loader, moved some grass after wetting it down, but not very effective.

I had to do something similar and box scrape blade worked the best for me (but basically had to bring an area down about a foot). I too tried the fel and ended up leaving little saw pattern indents in the ground :D.

Thanks for the info. Could you please explain how a box blade works, and how to adjust it for use? Looking at pictures they have chisels on them. By info I find on this site, 48" should be max size. What should I expect to pay for box scrape blade?

1*Here is what I use.
2*That's because a loader is not a bull dozer.
Loosen up the dirt with a Tiller or BH first and then you can move a lot of dirt.

I have a rotary harrow that I built that I use to get the weeds loosened up in my wife's riding ring and also in my crusher dust driveway. The driveway is hard packed and after 2 or 3 passes it will dig quite deep and fluff up the ground quite well. I then go over it with my landscape rake and it pulls all the weeds (and rocks) out of the soil leaving loose material behind. This could work to loosen your lawn so you can dig it up.

Thanks for the replies.
I went to look at the implement place. Saw box blades with and without chisels. it looks like the chisels would break up the dirt, making it easier to scrape. But I dont want to buy untill I know if I first need to buy something else to use to break up the dirt first. has anyone used the type of box blade with chisels, and how good was the result?

westteux,
Sorry for taking so long...the chisels (teeth) are what I use. It may take a little bit longer to do with just a box blade, but it does work very well. Change the angle of the box and only use the blade portion to smooth it out once you have it at the desired depth. But if your plan was to end up getting a tiller, then of course that speeds up the process.

If you have a place to get bolt on teeth for your bucket, with a little pratice this will be your best option. the boxblade will glide on top of the grass even with chisels it will take many passes over to drag off 3 in. I purchased teeth for one of my small tractors online for $50 for 5 of them. Plus with the box blade you are still left with the problem of removal of the dirt once it is off the yard. with the bucket you can move to a desired location. you will be amazed at how much better your bucket will serve you with teeth on it.
