grasshoppers out my ***

[Little General]

Today while mowing my hay field i noticed lots of grass hoppers and even quite a few preying mantis. Im kinda new to hay farming, is this bad?

I think it's just nature. I saw the first grasshoppers on our walk this morning. There is a flock of twenty or more quail in the yard right now. I would guess they are mopping up on the young hoppers.

The mantis are fascinating. At first the young are pastel green. As summer progresses they get larger and become tan. Just like the dead bunch grass.

This year I've cut ours and a elderly gent's 10 acres and both have a high level of uuuuge....Yahller colored grasshoppahs ......certainly not like Vegas but may be a cycle.....like june bugs and crickets that seem to just multiply, for a few short weeks, like mad...

In Michigan we get tons of crickets and grasshoppers. Tons! Middle of summer, you go walking through the fields and they are dozens leaping ahead of you. I wouldn't worry about that.

Bugs, birds, critters....it's called nature. When left alone and it takes care of its self, it's wonderful.

I'll be honest, I clicked on this because I thought maybe you had tons of Grasshopper Mowers that were willed to you and you were looking to unload them on all of us! Wishful thinking! :laughing::dance1:

When haying, leave a narrow strip of uncut hay in the middle of the field. Then get your sprayer out and nuke 'em.
