I've got some giant reed grass that grows 20+ feet tall each year. The roots are very similar to bamboo roots. They form a dense, woody matt about a foot deep. When I want to remove it(and I do often) I use my forks and slide under it from as many angles as possible and pry up by using the curl down(dump) funtion of the joystick. This loosens it up pretty good until it finally pops out. It helps to soak the heck out of it with water the night before.
