Re: \'gravel drive de-weeder\'

A landscape rake is my prefered choice for grading. One with wheels and that can be angled to pull the edge gravel in is ideal. You'll still have to use Roundup or something to kill the grass and weeds, but to me it simplier than a wholesale redo of the drive caused by extensive uprooting and tilling.

As an idea, you might identify what type of vegitation it is, and check it's salt resistance. If it isn't a salt resistant breed, you can buy the large 80# bags of salt ( nacl ) not the potassium stuff.. it is fertalizer.... and salt the road row... as long as you never plan on planting anything on it again. Salt is very effective for some vegitation.. very difficult to wash it out of the soil, but possible.

just an idea... check your local laws and ag extension.

What is the problem with having the grass growing down the middle. Let your driveway be what it is, A pile of gravel over some grass. Its not the sterile concrete driveway from the city.

If you choose this option, please keep the grass low. With the drought that many areas of the country are having, you run the risk of starting a fire if the grass should touch your catalitic converter.

Re: \'gravel drive de-weeder\'

Hi. I don't really know what a landscape rake is. The only image that jumps to mind is what I think is a hay rake, but not even sure about that.

My purpose is just to disturb the top layer of the driveway enough to disrupt growth of grass/weeds. I'm not real compulsive about grass. I consider that I'm mowing weeds that just tend to look like a lawn when mown consistently. But I have a fairly broad driveway area I'd prefer didn't have vegetation on it, and I'm looking for simple, effective, cheap, one time only expense ways to do the job. I'm rural, and if I lived alone, I'd probably ignore it all, except for a once or twice a year 'bush-hogging'. I'm turning into a grumpy old hermit type, except for the civilizing influences of SWMBO<G>...

Re: \'gravel drive de-weeder\'

there is no ONE time way to do it unless you dig up the gravel and put weed paper down then place the gravel back down. Then you might not have weeds till next year.

Yep! I agree<G>. But I was talking about a one time expense--making the de-weeder, or whatever it should be called. Not a one time de-weeding (don't I wish!).

Re: \'gravel drive de-weeder\'

In some parts of the country they call it a rock rake instead of a landscape rake.

It has shorter teeth (if that is the right word) and they are close together, it will get the rocks out of a plowed field, or level out a tilled area for a lawn or driveway, much better than a blade.

Most can angle so you can rake your gravel drive and not push the rocks out into your lawn.

The only way not to have grass in your gravel drive, is to pour a concrete drive. The gravel make a pretty good base.

Re: \'gravel drive de-weeder\'

As you know, grass is a root grower, not a top grower. Just disturbing the top layer will not substantially effect the grass... may stimulate it to grow more ( airation )?
