I like the bottom wider than the sides to prevent the trough from working up.

I can see your point but that has never been an issue with the way mine are made and there has been some heavy truck traffic on them.

My Grandfather has them all around his farm to control water... he still had some put in by his Grandfather...

I found the document the drawings came from. I reinvented the wheel I guess. Or maybe they copied me who knows. Im personally not wild about the rubber type break. I dont think it would hold up or divert as much water as the trough type. They would also make it a pain in the as^ to blade your road.

wont matter how much gravel/rock you toss on it... with out ditches to get the water off the road, its going to continue to be a problem.

cut ditches first, pull the material up onto the drive to make it taller, compact it, then put new rock ontop of that.

only way to wind up with a drive that will last

Here is the article I wrote for Backwoods Home Magazine many years ago. I used 2x8's and not the 2x6's as I stated earlier. (It's been about 15 years since I made them and my memory isnt getting any better.) I put mine in the hard way. Shovel , pick and tamp bar. I would hate to do it that way today.:)

I dont think it really adds anything to the discussion but it does prove I built them before the US Forest Service did.

I just noticed that the publishers left out a sentence about the top straps. I guess they were trying to fit it on one page. It makes the sentence about the flattened conduit seem pretty strange. Oh well, there goes my claim to fame. :confused2:

I installed one of TNMikes troughs on a section of my steep driveway after a curve where it is difficult to crown. We just had over 4" of rain and the thing worked perfect. I'll shoot some pic's tomorrow........
