For me, a rear blade is just about the most important implement for road work. I can do without the others if I have a rear blade that has angle, tilt, and offset adjustments and if it can be adjusted hydraulically, all the better. With a blade that has offset to either side and sideways tilt and angle, you can even cut ditches for drainage along the sides of a gravel road or for a fire-line almost like a plow. A box blade is best for leveling were-as a rear blade will easily allow you to put a crown on the road and pull gravel back from the edges.

That sounds like sage advice. TY!

I'm not sure why you would need a grading scraper and a box scraper. I would axe the box scraper and get a rear blade instead.

I understand... am leaning toward axing the grading scraper because a good box blade with hydraulic teeth can rip nicely and the box will move material... very versatile. I also really like the suggestion of getting a good rear blade with hydraulics...

For me the difference between use of the rear blade, land plane grading scraper & roll over box blade is because of my driveway. It was constructed with just enough clay/volcanic ash on the final surface that after the winter snows/spring rains, the "gravel surface" will dry to concrete... Now, if your road/driveway has a top surface of screened gravel or the like - then the rear blade will probably work just fine...

Good point oosik, I have heard of places where clay is mixed into the road base. But where I live that is not customary. We have a heavy red clay soil (with lots of rocks) and usually roads are constructed with 1+1/2" road base and then 3/4" crushed rock on top of it.

Excellent choices. ...If your material has such finds and packs, the box blade with scarifiers or your FEL bucket run in front of the tractor with max tuck of the bucket, after loosening with the box scarifiers is the right implement for that.

I just bought a 6' rototiller and I should have bought it when they first became available. You will figure uses for it daily. It is an amazing, time saving, competent tool for lots of jobs. Can't rave enough about that. I would only buy the gear drive.....think about the old hand operated garden tillers that originally were gear drive and to reduce costs mfgrs. went to chain drive and the complaints rolled in. Same device, same pressures. Spec says 80-90, but if you are going to use for long periods of time, I'd opt for the 85-140 gear oil. I did in mine.

All the rest are "good to go". Dealer did you a service...

Thank you Mark. The area where I live it is customary to use fines in the rock base so your second method will be the way to go. Thanks for the thoughts about the gear driven tiller too!

I could make several recommendations, but the most important, and remember, these implements are what you are going to use to make your living with. DO NOT CHEAP OUT.

Wow Brian Perfect advice, as I was about to ask around the forum for alternate implement providers... there is so much range in price and quality! I may want to follow up with you about a couple of the technical things you said...

Well, I think that's a good list. I had a hydro, now I have a 12x12 shuttle. I like them both and I think either would work for you. There is some plus or minus - under over on your list. If it were me this would be my list...

The Tail Wheel is the most important option on your list.

BRAVO!
You obviously understand the proper tools for the job, and how to use them!
Many do not!
You are exactly correct!

Thank you fried, for seconding a solid suggestion!

Last evening I was on YouTube looking at road maintenance equipment in Europe. It was an eye opener. Lots of new to me equipment out there. It also looks pricey! There are many different versions of the land plain that are impressive. Much different than the angle iron drags.

Is "land plain" another word for grading scraper?

For maintaining gravel roads.. A land plane is tough to beat. Time savings and end results are great

Thanks for that. Is a "land plane" the same as a grading scraper?

Being a rookie at all of this you should take my thoughts with a large dose of scepticism! Having said that, I too need to do driveway maintenance and brush clearing. My dealer recommended a "Ratchet Rake" from Mohawk Equipment. Have a look at their videos on line. It may be of use to you. Good luck!

Kevan

OK, thank you Kevan!
