Gravel Driveway - pothole

I would agree disturbing the rest of the drive to fix this is not a good idea. Some good ideas in the thread on how to do by hand. We just filled it in with 53's a couple years ago.... but it is back in the exact same spot, and frankly came back fairly quickly.

Tha5s where the fines come in. Or a little concrete mixed in.

I do not know what is under the drive. We have been in the house 6 years. We have spread the #53's on top once in that time. It is time to do it again. The base is very solid almost looks like concrete, but clearly is not. It is limestone that has been packed down over the years.

Some people like working on the drive. I don’t. Our drive was a muddy mess when we bought. I added gravel every summer for several years. It’s very thick now. My thinking is that the cost of gravel spread over a period of years is worth it to have a good solid drive. My drive rises 100 feet in about 800 feet, so really steep. I think that if someone is fighting ruts and potholes all the time they probably don’t have enough gravel. I’ve also known some folks who grade the drive all the time and don’t give it a chance to pack down tight and they have a lot of problems.

I had a spot like this on my old driveway. Finally did what others here have suggested, dug into the hole a little more and filled with QuickCrete. While it was still wet mixed the rock into the top so the pothole was now slightly higher than the area around it. Not too much where you would then get a bump, just a little.
Never a problem after that.

If I filled potholes with concrete, they would all get pulled out on some future grading.
