Sounds like they would make dandy burn barrels. Especially the first time!

Egon left off a very important step when filling a grease gun from a pail by the suction method. Get all the excess grease off the gun barrell, gun head, your hands, pants, side of the pail, where you laid down the lid, etc. At least I seem to recall doing all that when I filled them. Maybe I was just naturally messy.

There is no way to get all that grease off. It just moves around. Usually it will reappear on the seat of your pants or on your shirt sleeves in places where it cannot be seen!:D :D :D

I always thought it was on a favorite chair, wall, anywhere but where it will do some good.

Even with grease cartridges the grease is everywhere.

I can only imagine what life would be like with a barrel full of grease. Especially as it started to get empty.

I thought I must be doing something wrong when changing grease cartridges. I end up wearing an abundance of grease, and usually always have a problem getting the gun bleed and pumping again. Sounds like it might be a common problem! Are there any tips to make replacing cartridges easier to replace or bleed?[/QUOTE

Loosen the head a couple turns and let the plunger loose to force the air out then tighten it up and go to work.

Try and make sure the grease is warm.

You can also lock the plunger so you can apply pressure while working the pump. This is about the least messy.:D

The secrets of life, as I have found them are:

1. Warm grease -- store cartridges inside in the winter. A plastic bag around them helps when they leak.

2. I finally figured out how to prime/bleed my HF electric grease gun. When you take it apart, you can look inside the head, where the cartridge holder screws in, and you can actually see the inlet for the high pressure pump, which is just a ~1/4" steel rod which moves in a cylinder. You can see the entrance port for the cylinder.

Scoop all the grease you can out of the old cartridge and build up a little mound of it right over the entrance port to the high pressure pump before you put the new cartridge in.

Since I discovered this, I have never had to bleed the grease gun.

The simple mess free way to fill a grease gun is using a pail of grease with a bulk filler pump. You never have to unscrew the end of your grease gun again. :)
