Oil & Fuel Grease gun help please!

/ Grease gun help please! #21
Same here with a new John Deere branded gun. I nearly broke the zerk trying to get the collet off. I tried loosening it with my fingers but that didn't work. I tried using pliers... I finaly put the nozzle in a vise and locked onto the outer housing with vice grips. I applied enough force to start distorting the outer housing and schredding metal and it would not budge. Mine had hex flats and knurling. I agree they are supposed to turn and loosen but mine is going nowhere.

Perhaps just unscrew it from the whip or pipe, pitch it, and go to TSC and get one that will come apart.. The last one I did on a chinese model, did finally break loose and unscrew but it took a lot of force. I was of the mindset that it will unscrew or I will twist it in two. I didn't much care which.

I have to ask. For those of you who had to use pliers (or worse) to unscrew the two piece head apart how hard was it to use before you broke it free? On all of my two piece heads if you tighten it all the way down it's impossible to get onto a fitting and if you are on a fitting when you tighten it up It's never going to come off. I kind of like that feature. Every once in a while I get a zerk that I need three hands to grease (since I only have hand operated guns). I can tighten up the head to free up a hand to pump grease.

Referring to my first post and adding some info-

I went through the vice grip attempt without effect (except metal damage. If you think about it, because the metal is "soft", the tighter the vice grips- the more pressure on the threads that prevents it from being turned. Using vice grips is counter productive.

After trying wrenches alone, I ended up taking the hose off the grease gun and and soaking the head in penetrating oil for a while. Then, I used box end wrenches to loosen it up. Cleaned up all the parts, made sure the jaws were intact the put it back together with a little di-electrode grease on the threads to prevent corrosion.
