I know there has been many threads on this subject here. Read many.
Some say no......some say go.

My question is....since I found nothing......but has anyone had any problems with filling the gearbox with the corn head grease?
Ive read how many have done this and been the mower has been used for from a year to yearS.

If no one has ever had a problem....why would one say dont do it? (besides a warrenty issue....in this case im talking of an old machine)

I got mine almost torn down but cant figure out how to get to the seal. Seems like this might be the tuff part to go any further
Cant upload pic from phone...but have the large pulley of gearbox.

obviously the real answer is to repalce the seal, and bearing if loose.

some times you find a piece of equipment that had a special seal arangement.. and the seal is NLA and cannot be matched up with ID/OD/width.. and you have to either get the housing machined for a off-the-shelf seal ( $$$$ ).. or improvise.

many guys that have a weeps seal will go with a NLGI EP 0 grease.. like the cornheader grease.

an oil bath is best for a system designed for an oil bath.. but SOME lube is better than NO lube.

0 and 00 greases are semi stiff.. but flow and fill voids when hot and or worked. unlike #1 and higher grades that will form cavities ona housing wall and starve a gear set.

it's for sure not the ideal fix.. but if I have a usefull piece of equipment that is simply ot worth the effort or $ to replace a hard to get to.. or hard to find seal.. and it's not financially possible to junk it and I need it.... grease usually gets it...

input or output shaft seal leaking?

fence wire ate out my brush hog seal, i drilled and tapped the fill plug for a grease fitting, pumped in a tube of axle grease and have been using it for 4 years. every so often i pump in half a tube (once a year i guess). it actually runs cooler than with oil(the gear box itself).
