Grease on battery terminals?

/ Grease on battery terminals? #21
I used to use a dielectric grease on one battery that had a corrosion problem but it was a messy. Ever since I discovered Rust Check I have been giving my battery connections a shot of that, works better than any grease, much less mess, easier too.

At the risk of sounding like a Christmas joke, are you talking about Red or Green Mace ?

Its all snake oil. The most important thing is to not over tighten the cable ends. It is easy to flex the case and break the seal. Side terminals are not as susceptible. However top posts will easily be moved by a fist of ham.

I used fluid film this year for the first time , glad to know others have had good results with it .

It's not snake oil. The bond between case and post is something that the purchaser has no control over pre purchase and even with a new battery the seal is susceptible to being less than ideal. Using a method to control corrosion in such a case (no pun intended) is only prudent.

I never use just one wrench on a top post to tighten it, I always use two so there is as little torque transmitted to the posts as possible. Sounds like you don't...

You can also buy 'battery terminal spray' at most auto parts stores. The stuff I have is a yellow wax that never hardens. Clean terminal and battery, tighten good, spray the krap out of it, and forget...... Been using it for 20 years... They may make better stuff, but this stuff works...

If it is snake oil, I wonder why every stationary battery installation comes with a multipage document with photo's about how to tighten the connectors and put on the No-Ox-Id grease? Why would the battery manufactures (Globe battery is who I remember) goes to the trouble to send the grease, and go into detail how to apply it.. just wondering.

KOUA,
The idea is simply to prevent oxydation. Nice to see so many different "sprays" being effective in this regard!
The wax idea seems excellent, and coming to my mind, is the wax undercoating manufacturers put underneath automobiles these days and age. It sticks so well, and for a very long time, and keeps rust at check in the crualest of environments. A barrier against the elements, wheter being air, or salt, or water, or UV rays, or whatever... Its easyer to send grease than a aerosol can!

Oh, I am a firm believer. My post even though I did not quote the post in question was in response to someone who is not a believer.:)
