I try to be like those professional painters from back in the day where only the tip of the brush got paint on it after a full day of painting.

My father is like that. He can work all day under an old dirty and oily dump truck and only need to brush his hands off. I'd be covered in so much grime that there is a different color filth under the top layer of filth. A lot of my clothes become rags. Even when getting dirty is a hobby.

For accidents on good clothes, I do the goop trick. Scrub it out with hand cleaner and wash. If the stain doesn't come out, don't dry it. Once the clothes go into the dryer, the heat sets the stain forever.

I don’t have a real 9-5 job but I still wear work uniforms. It’s worth what they cost to throw a pile of grease covered clothes in a pile and send them back. They do a good job. Quart of grease or paint on them doesn’t matter. They come back clean.

Also, there is a product called Hand-D-Glove that is rubbed on your hands prior to getting down n dirty that will keep your hands from getting so filthy. I used it back in my spray painting days. I also used baby oil to get the paint off my face and glasses.

My hands actually hurt when dirty so I have to clean them frequently. Now I use the thin nitrile gloves almost all the time now. I found XXL size and they are easy on and off and don't make my hands sweat as bad as the skin tight ones.

I use the nitrile gloves a lot more now. I wish I would have gotten in the habit long ago. I will have to try buying/using XXL instead of XL. Thanks for the tip.

I can also get multiple uses out of most pair because they are easier to remove. Turn them inside out and blow the fingers back out to let dry. If the work is not to filthy-dirty I will wear the thin Mechanix gloves.

I wonder what all that stuff does to septic tank bacteria.

I buy only black clothes for working on anything oil or grease related and use the normal detergents, also have a separate wash machine. I also try like heck not to get much grease or oil on me. It all destroys a septic system.
I prewash greasy or oily clothes in a bucket with dawn dish detergent. Outside with the garden hose.
Dispose of the water along the fence line.

Clothes are then washed along with my other work clothes.

I am very cautious about what goes down the drain. I even make sure the wife does not use those fancy body washes. They all have some type oil in them.

Which mil thickness do you use? I tend to rip up the light blue (5mil) gloves on first use but I like them as disposable. The 7mil (dark blue) for heavier jobs work much better and I do reuse those if not too greasy. I also have 9mil (dark gray) that I rarely use. As far as HF quality vs. other nitrile gloves, I don't see any difference.

I'm a fan of the HF black nitrile gloves. Seem as good as any 9mil.

We use either GoJo or Goop brand hand cleaner as a pre-treat for oily/greasy clothes. Works really well like others have mentioned. Also tried other brands and found they didn't work as well, so only those 2 brands are what i buy.

An old cotton sock on the grease gun barrel works wonders. Itll take in a lot of grease before it gets gooey. Then into the wood stove.

No matter how or where the clothes are washed, the environment is going to get polluted. That is a given.

One definitely wants to avoid 'polluting' a septic system.

With that in mind, how about diverting the output from the washing machine to somewhere other than the septic system? Simply having it drain onto the ground it better than having it drain into the septic system.

In Sydney, we obviously have 'mains' sewerage systems so there is no septic system to put at risk. Even so, when there has been insufficient rain, we have a long hose that allows us to divert the washing machine water onto the lawn.

My washing machine water drains onto my lawn. The immediate area where it drains stays dead but all around is green. But we use peroxide for bleach too. Not putting the stuff down my septic tank. Makes it go years without problems with monthly recharge of septic stuff. Stuff because I'm not sure of exactly what it is but it keeps it working. Some kind of enzymes or something.
