Greasing Land Pride bush hog driveshaft

I grease 1000 RPM shafts every month. 540, once a year, sometimes twice if I really use the heck out of an implement.

When my front U-joint was installed at the factory it was put in backward with the grease zerk facing forward, making it impossible to grease without removing the driveline from the pto shaft. Even after making severe modifications (ie removing) most of the plastic guard it is still a pain. Somebody said they only grease theirs once a year. I do mine probably 10 times per year.

Put in backwards? Isn't that an angled zerk and screw in type? Pretty sure it is. If so, you just need to find a way to get a tool on it and turn the zerk far enough to where you can get a grease gun on it. Not a good idea to twist it off however.

Good luck turning that zerk . I almost broke it off on mine before the wrench stripped out. I left it alone and ripped all that plastic crap off so I could get to it. I know what he means about backwards...you can get it, tho if you have a hose on your gun.

"Wrench stripped out" meaning the wrench slipped around the zerk? They can be real buggers for sure. And many times they do break off, as you feared. I think I would try a small box end wrench like the old "ignition wrenches" that existed back when humans could adjust timing, etc. Probably tap the little wrench with something in order to jar the zerk into turning.

I put a copper washer under a couple zerks I needed to rotate. They align a bit differently with the washer under there.

Sometimes I just back them off 1/2 a turn to make for better alignment for the grease gun nozzle.

If you ever break a grease fitting off, a very small tapered "easy out" is the perfect tool for removing the remaining threaded piece.

Thanks guys, will drill a sm. hole in the plastic cover to I can access the front zerk. Don't think I can access the back one like this but will check.
