I've had an HX-15 for about 4 years now. Apparently I'm greasing it correctly or I would have issues by now.

But I can't help but to think how poor of a design the CV joint is on it. Instead of having a dedicated grease fitting for the CV joint itself (like most all others do), it supposed to have "passages" from each of the UV joints to grease the CV. You are supposed to pump grease in the UV's fittings and it is supposed to make its way to the CV cavity.

However, from day one, the problem has always been that when greasing the front universal joint, grease oozes out from around the seals after only a couple pumps. Grease doesn't do this on the back one, so I assume that that most of the grease is getting in there from the back uv joint.

Does anyone else have this problem?

So you're stating your JD HX-15 cv joint doesn't have grease fitting(key 7) on cv center yoke listed in parts catalog? I know all the JD rd balers I've owned had a grease fitting on cv joint yoke in that location. HX15 operators manual shows 3 grease fittings on cv joint

The older models did, which is what your attachment is showing I believe.

The newer models have this type:

My old style 1508 has the zerk committed to greasing the CV. Not sure I like the new style.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as it taking grease, Deere, bushog brand, and the heavy landpride batwings as great cutters.

Our old 240D Benz had CV joints in place of U joints between the differential and the wheels. They were sealed up with an enclosing neoprene boot. One of the boots broke on our old 220D. I bought a new one. To avoid having to remove the axle, etc., I slit the boot up its seam. Put it over the CV and then used super glue to put it back together. Was like that when I sold it.

By design an axle CV joint slings the grease toward the wear points. By design a driveshaft CV joint such as on the PTO shaft in question slings the grease away from the wear point. Thus the need for regular service.

Just for clarification...

I know that CV joints on PTO shafts need regular greasing. I have several other implements with CV's. They all have dedicated grease fittings on the CV joint itself that allows you to directly pump grease into it.

The HX-15 uses a Waltershied shaft, which does NOT have that dedicated fitting, and instead is supposed to rely (as shown in the above diagrams) on grease coming from the U-joint cross fittings to go through passages and make its way to the CV joint.

My question is if anyone else has had my experience where only the rear U-joint (directly behind the CV joint) is the only one accepting grease. The front U-joint has grease coming out from around the seals after only a few pumps.

Maybe that's normal, maybe its not, but that's' what I am trying to find out.

In all my experience I've only had one CV and BROTHER - it was a real PITA. It was on the front drive shaft of my '69 Ford Bronco. That dam thing would start wobbling and you knew it was time for an overhaul. Finally - I replaced the entire CV joint with one heavy duty U-joint. Not one of Ford's better ideas.
