Late shipping activity! Here steamer Philip R. Clarke (1952) waits off the long-dormant, 1915-built CN Dock 5 waiting for H. Lee White (1974) to depart the ship loaded with load iron ore pellets. Tug Helen H. (1967) stood by waiting to break ice for the arriving Clarke (January 13th, 2025).
CCGS ice breaker Griffon in the Detroit River with the ice is just loose and floating through from above. The Canadian and American Coast Guard vessels keep the shipping lanes open for winter travel between lakes Erie, Huron and Michigan while also protecting our borders by not allowing the rivers to freeze solid making them open for illegal crossings. 1.14.25
A nice shot of our four wintering classics at Fraser before the Boland arrives, likely on Friday. Michipicoten in layup awaiting its fate (no new news), Oberstar easing into the dry dock, Lee A Tregurtha mooring with the help of Missouri, and Ryerson in long term layup. Edwin H. Gott and American Spirit south of Rock Cut stuck in ice this morning…American Spirit was on the move when I got to Conely Point DNR boat launch. USCG Neah Bay and Biscayne Bay out getting ice broke to get them going. These photos were taken yesterday and the rock cut is below the Soo on the Saint Mary's river.
More late season photos! The 1000 ft James Barker stuck in the Port of Cleveland this morning for 3 hours. When I left after using all 6 batteries the Tug Michigan finally was on its way to help free it out.
