And less wind?
Wind greatly effects Lake Erie. Since it's so shallow, and the wind predominantly moves from west to east, it can create huge differences in the water level. It's like a shallow bathtub. You'll think that would effect ice coverage. I know almost annually, ice fishermen on Lake Erie get stranded when wind blows and separates large sections of ice from shore.

January weather has Lake Superior dropping fast

Wind has kept Lake Superior mostly ice-free

Lake Superior satellite photo

A satellite photo taken early Thursday shows Lake Superior mostly ice-free, except for its bay and island areas. Cold north winds blowing over the lake's open water create water vapor which form the white, puffy clouds seen in the image. Contributed / NOAA

DULUTH — Lake Superior declined by 4.7 inches in January, nearly double the usual 2.8-inch drop for the month, according to the International Lake Superior Board of Control.
The lake’s level now sits 4.7 inches below the long-term average for Feb. 1 and is about a foot below the Feb. 1, 2021, level.
Officials said water supply to the lake, stream flow and precipitation were near an all-time low in January.
Dry conditions also caused lakes Michigan-Huron to drop 3.9 inches in January, more than the usual 0.8-inch drop. The lakes now sit 10.2 inches above average for Feb.1 but are 17.3 inches below the level at this time last year and 28 inches below the record high set in summer 2020.
Meanwhile very windy conditions have helped keep Lake Superior mostly ice-free despite recent frigid air temperatures. As of Thursday the lake was only about 10% ice covered, well below the 30%-plus ice coverage for this time of winter, according to data from the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory.

Couple other neat facts...

Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are the exact same level and really could be considered one body of water since they are connected by the Straits of Mackinac, which is 3.5 miles wide. If that were taken into effect, they should be considered the largest fresh water lake in the world by surface area, being much larger than Lake Superior.

Lake Baikal in Russia is less than 1/2 the surface size of Lake Superior, but contains 2.3 times the amount of water by volume: 23% of the world's surface fresh water VS 10% for Lake Superior.

9. The maximum wave ever recorded on Lake Superior was 9.45 metres or 31 feet high.

10. If you stretched the shoreline of Lake Superior out to a straight line, it would be long enough to reach from Duluth, Minnesota to the Bahamas.

11. Over 300 streams and rivers empty into Lake Superior with the largest source being the Nipigon River in Ontario.

12. The average underwater visibility of Lake Superior is about 8 metres or 27 feet, making it the cleanest and clearest of the Great Lakes. Underwater visibility in some spots reaches 30 meters.

A really nice video of American Century arriving in Superior, Wisconsin on January 17. Note the tug captain calls the AC a "boat" and its main radar unit it not functioning. When the boom goes past you can see the little wind sock on it. Our buddy spent the summer on this boat as 1st mate.
