Posted on FB today. Are those loading or unloading cranes see on the dock?

An image of the whaleback freighter James B. Colgate at dock, circa 1892 (Image Source: (Image Source: University of Wisconsin Madison Digital Collection – The Great Lakes Maritime History Project). Given the vessel’s history (see below), the photograph would have been taken not long after the ship’s completion.

The weathered appearance of the vessel could be due to the poor quality of the print or an incorrect date in the research database that contains the image. The original photograph is from the Kenneth E. Thro Collection of the Jim Dan Hill Library at the University of Wisconsin Superior.

One good thing about CN's Dock 6 being busy is that it allows for some nice rail and sail combos. James R. Barker loading while day job R921 spots for dumping. Duluth, MN - June 19, 2023

Dated photo. Can we see why thrusters are important? -----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal in Wisconsin was opened as a much needed shortcut into the waters of Green Bay from Lake Michigan in 1881. The narrowest section of the canal is 1.3 miles long and 160 feet wide. In this aerial view looking west, the motor vessel Edwin H. Gott has just passed the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Light on the right. The Gott is 1004 feet long and 105 feet wide - so it is a tight fit with no room for error. - Photo by Kevin O'Donnell

160' - 105' = 55'

55'/2 = 27.5' of clearance on each side at the narrowest point of the canal, for a 1004' long object with how many thousand square feet facing the wind? YIKES!

The control on these things is amazing. (y)

For those interested in details:
Launched sept 8, 1906
She had a triple expansion steam engine with 1650 IHP
Maiden voyage took her from Detroit light to Duluth for a shipment of iron ore
In 1929, she was sold to Boom Electric Welding Co. and converted to a scraper type self-unloader
Her entire fleet was sold in 1969 to the American Steamship Co.
In 1971 she was sold off as scrap and sent to the breakers at Port Colborne, Ontario
For reference, the Edmund Fitzgerald was launched in June, 1958 so there’s a decent chance these ships met on at least a few occasions.

The sun faded before the Mesabi Miner arrived and the Viking Polaris departed, but it still made for an interesting image as fans of the band Hippo Campus (including my daughter) gathered for their concert at Bayfront Festival Park. In Duluth, MN on June 24, 2023
