Here's a guy in the Chevy grabbed my attention right away. Seeing a sedan parked on the ice in front of the Cort sure does give a nice size perspective to the first thousand footer on the lakes. I really like the way he thinks I'll bet it was rather nice not having to walk to the fishing spot. Sturgeon Bay WI.

With everyone in for winter, a small army descends on them to prepare for another non-stop season. Here, shipyard workers at Fraser board the John J. Boland (1973) and other vessels there last Thursday morning for work. January 23rd, 2025 Fraser Shipyard, Superior WI.

Really neat photo.

Having fished from an aluminum boat in 33 degree water, it's like an ice box. Wonder how cold it gets in those ships in winter dock? Do they keep the engine running? Do they supply supplemental heating from shore? Or do they just buck up and get it done?

Well, steel boats would be the same cold, but working on them is out of my forte. I guy I worked with in Superior at a RR shop wanted me to go with him back to Fraser (ship yard there) but I didn't. I believe they heat compartments they are working in, if possible. The engines are not run all winter. Would you run your 6000hp engine all winter? But they would be servicing them. Some have 4 engines. Two propulsion and two thrusters, some of which are 4000hp.

I was wondering if maybe they just kept a small one running for steam.

I've been involved with several old steam building guts/remodels. They installed what amounted to large radiators with fans in the halls and used flex hose to connect them to the steam boiler lines. Provided a lot of heat.

Off a diesel engine?
