I have a splitter like your older horizontal as well as a new (horizontal/vertical one). I really liked the old one for the reason you mentioned (clear work area, easier to get large logs on) as well as ambidextrous operation, but... as I got up in years, my back didn't care for being bent over all the time.
For the new ones, there are several models/designs out there. Again, I found some that had confined work areas but others were more open. The one I ended up getting is made by Speeco (although the brochure says New Holland) and it does have a decent work area. No leaning. Although mine didn't come with fenders, if it did, I'd probably remove. Too easy to catch a shin.
