3pt splitters are pretty slow compared to the stand alone.

Also, I often use the tractor to move logs and load the trailer while the boys are running the splitter. A standalone splitter has worked out very well for me.

I have use of an older log splitter that has worked well for decades. It is of a different design than all the ones I now see.

On the new models, the "cradle" where the log sits to be split is (in my opinion) at the WRONG end of the splitter. I realize this is to allow the beam to be rotated up to allow vertical usage. I have found the vertical direction of these splitters to be useless (again, my opinion), and when in the traditional horizontal position, the cradle is positioned at the same location as the wheels. This requires LEANING OVER the wheels to get to the cradle. My back hurts enough without having to suspend the weight of a log at a significant distance from my body.

The older design of the splitter I use has the cradle at the "tongue" end away from the wheels and engine. This way I can stand directly over the log and not have to LEAN into to cradle. This also allows easier lifting of larger logs onto the cradle. I simply roll the log to the beam and lift STRAIGHT UP just 4" from the beam!

What is interesting to note is that all the newer splitters seem to incorporate this flawed style.....

Dave,

That was the reason that I asked. I had a homebuilt on my 8N that was coupled to the rear pump on my 8N that ran the backhoe. That splitter was pretty darn fast in high range at PTO speed. The pump was very large with 1/2 inch ID hoses.

brinet,

I have a splitter like your older horizontal as well as a new (horizontal/vertical one). I really liked the old one for the reason you mentioned (clear work area, easier to get large logs on) as well as ambidextrous operation, but... as I got up in years, my back didn't care for being bent over all the time.

For the new ones, there are several models/designs out there. Again, I found some that had confined work areas but others were more open. The one I ended up getting is made by Speeco (although the brochure says New Holland) and it does have a decent work area. No leaning. Although mine didn't come with fenders, if it did, I'd probably remove. Too easy to catch a shin.

Most of the more modern 3pt splitters come with 540 rpm pumps because most of the modern/popular tractors have 540 only at the 3pt. That is what I was referring to.

I like the newer splitter designs. I am somewhat physically challenged and being able to put the splitter in the vertical allows me to split wood by myself and at the same time I can leave the splitter connected to the Honda 4-wheeler that I pull it around with. I just split the wood, put it in the loader bucket of the tractor and take it anywhere I want the wood.
