Yes Ash is great for the soil! But lump charcol is better than Ash!

Was going to suggest some aluminum and rust to get the fire started ;)

Been watching Myth Busters huh?:D

It's been years since I had to burn a pile of green wood, but I've burned many large piles with whole trees by placing used tires under the pile. I would put diesel in a pump-up sprayer and would get the smaller debris burning, then get the tires burning good and then shoot the diesel into the pile. The diesel would be like a "flame thrower" when the fuel hit the fire. The key to getting the piles burning, in my opinion, were the used tires in that once they caught fire they burned really hot. Once the larger stuff caught it was important to keep the pile stacked and tight.

The negative was the heavy black smoke. My burning experinces were close to 30 years ago and the environmental issues were not as much of an issue then as now. State and county laws may prohibit burning tires now.

Havent been back for a while but have to say we got pretty good at burning getting the land ready.

If I learned one thing I would say it was to start a fire and feed with with wood that has end grain showing (CUT !!). Piling stuff up and lighting it always proved to be a challenge. A hot bed of coals on the ground is the key :)

We cut down another 18 trees for our back yard and burned them green. Once we had a fire going we could feed about anything into the fire and it would burn.

My last burn consisted of root balls that we pulled with a back hoe. Of course this is the toughest part to burn but a 25 mph wind and some shingles from my Dads roofing project did the trick.

If anyone is bored you can see a youtube video of land transformation this year.

Its about 6 minutes.

Thanks again to everyones comments.

Nice spot, the pictures show quite a transition -- I thought about this thread last weekend when I had to burn a pile of timbers that used to be buried in the dirt floor of my old barn as walkways -- propane torch to the rescue again. I no longer burn beaver dam refuse however -- I now have a chipper:D
Once the first snow is upon us I have a pile of old wood from a piece of the barn that was taken down before it fell down -- should be quite a blaze!

Thanks. Was a labor of love. Nice not being in the city with a neighbor 30 feet away.

The propane torch has its place and we used it on the big pile. Saves a lot of time getting small stuff going.

That and used the mower deck to fan the fire a few times :)
