What do you think about the bird flu (not the moderator) hes a nice guy.

I heard some gossip about a govt. guy on Opra show saying body bags, economy, disaster were looming ahead, not if -but when it that flu hits
I havent really kept up on disasters since Y2K, my take on that was the clinton administration knew, but said nothing because it was a boom to the economy.

Just follow the $$ on this one too ?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

There are probably a few lunatics sitting on a mountain of granola and MRE's up in the hills, waiting for the Y2K catastrophe.

Toy, I think you might have the disasters mixed up /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Y2K was 6 years ago... you can come out now!

Im asking about the bird flu, thats the latest one.

The facts have been recently stated. The earth has warmed in the last 100 years. This is based on a 365 day average, not just record daily highs. The hottest 5 years on this planet in the last century have been in the last 7 years,in those years they may or may not contain record highs for one single day.And in those years there may be a record low for a certain area.Doesnt matter, any body can do what they want...with these facts.

I know what year it is Ernie /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif, just amusing myself I guess. Stay tuned to Oprah, she'll keep you posted on the bird flu. If there wasn't a catastrophe looming on the horizon the evening news would be awfully boring. I'm more concerned with our friends in Iran developing the bomb. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Plumboy, I'm with you, or at least with what I believe to be the gist of your post. I like my science "straight up", no anecdotes.

The earth's mean temperature rose about 1 degree c. in the last hundred years, and is expected to rise by as much as 4.5 degrees c. (around 9 F.) in the next hundred years. If this does indeed come to pass, would it have risen by such an amount due to "natural" causes? I very much doubt it. And such a rise will have a huge impact on civilization as we know it. Huge disruptions in weather patterns that might lead to drought in some places, flooding in others, and maybe even colder than "normal" temperatures in others. All in all, not good signs for the prospects of being able to grow enough food to sustain the estimated 9 billion people who will inhabit this planet 100 years from now.

Don't care, because you're not going to be around then? If that is one's attitude, can it be inferred that one who has such an attitude cares only for himself, and not for others who aren't born yet?

Do I know for a fact that man's activities are dramatically increasing the "natural" global warming that has been occurring for many thousands of years, at a rate that will cause great suffering in the relatively near future? No. Do I believe this to be the case? Yes.

The planet is also running out of fresh water at an alarming rate, but that's another story.

Toy , I put 3 9mm slugs thru my TV back in 1979 and I haven't looked back yet. So Opra will have to remain a mystery around our house
It was just someone in town talking about what they saw on the tube so I thought I would ask since I don't tune in.

Maybe someone has more info than lady O to share here ?

Ernie,
Cant say I blame you about the TV.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Media today is trash, if its negative its news. The goal is to get folks rilled up and worried about the future.

My kid is BIG on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic and such... So I learn allot about scientific facts. Some not so intelegent, but most are really logical.

Anyhow, we as people have been causing the warming due to living. But past civilizations have done the same. The earth goes through reoccuring cycles. I'm not really sure we can change it, its nature. We can point the blame like some would do. But we still need to be proactive, this is the reason we need to accept the emmissions and technology advancements that no one seems to like on their tractors, cars, and trucks. We cannot continue the way of the past, like releasing freon into the atmosphere, dumping oil in the ground, etc.. I'm not accusing anyone here of that, just making the point that things are changing to prolong our warming so our kids and grandkids have a place to live a normal life if possible.

The bird flu, well..... Chicken little, wants you to wig out /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.. Just like mad cow, it seems that most of these dieases are a major problem overseas and come from dirty conditions.. If we buy our meat from a good source and cook it properly, I dont believe it will be an issue. Tricinossis(?) was another scare that was beat into our head from pork years ago..

I dont intend to come accross as an authotiry on the subject, I'm far from it. I just dont worry about it. I do my part to "do the right thing" when it comes to the environment, but I sleep at night and enjoy what I have.. If the bird flu gets me, so be it... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bah....

The earth is changing. The weather patterns are more extreme, in my lifetime, in my area, I have noticed this.

I tell you what IS interesting. A certain political figure talking about this subject, for free. (Please keep the politics out of your thoughts and go listen to the message). I find it interesting that someone is trying to get people to listen and take note on a subject of great importance and controversy.
