Ah, the old temperature graph from cities trick. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I love this one. At least the chart says that the data has not been quality controlled. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The weather man was talking about the "hot" January we have been having. Course its not the hotest. Four or fifth hotest on record. On record going back to 1944 when the readings were taken at the airport.

Now the thing is the amount of building, construction, houses, roads, and conversely the removal of forests and farmland over the last 60 years is extreme in our area. And that effects local temperatures. Even in the short time I have been here the amount of building around the airport has been dramatic to say the least. There is a town under the south end of the airport. Something like 30 years ago they had 200 residents. In 2000 it had 5280 people. In 2004 it was up to almost 12,000 people. The north and west sides of the airport have had equal if not greater growth. The east side bumps up on a really nice state park. That growth has to increase the temps recorded at the airport. I know they are almost alway hotter than the temps at my place both when I was in town or now out in the woods. Even though I am 20 or so miles south.

Some of the temperature comparisions have to be looked at with some questions. Don't even get me started on temps recorded in South Florida. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dan,

I fall to the "naturally occurring" side of the argument. My high school science teacher emphasized that we should not rely too heavily on "personnal observational science" to support our theories. Her example was a butterfly that lived its entire life in a garden. When it emerged from its cacoon the average temp was in the 70s but by the time the butterfly died the average temp had fallen into the 40s. By personnal observation the planet had experienced dramatic global cooling when in fact it was the natural course of the seasons.

Over simplified to be sure, but hey, that's what you get with a public education /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

There was an aritcle in this mornings paper that was pretty interesting. Mt. Washington N.H. had a record set for the whole month of January since keeping track since 1932. There is no snow up there and the temperature averaged 11 degrees above normal for the whole month. Hhhmmmm.

Yet the warmest Jan on record in Eastern Iowa was 1880, 13 degrees above "normal". Hmmm

Doesn't the planet killing asteroid that's going to hit us in the next 20 or so years trump the global warming issue?/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Seriously, I don't know what to believe anymore. How much is fact and whos fact.....how much is hype and how much is simply sensationalized journalism...I certainly don't know.

Climate change is happening that is a fact. It's happened many times during the life of this little sphere we call home. I believe human activity is affecting the environment and probably the climate. I don't see how all these noxious substances we produce by simply living can't have an effect. It's just chemistry. Take a look at what is happening at both poles and remember we are a closed system.

Just my thoughts /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
