Due to time this is four threads in one. I know this will not help my post count but after reading a recent thread post count does not matter, its spelling, grammer, and content...so I'm screwed anyway:D.

Please ignore the date on the pictures for some reason my camera goes from 2004 to 2012 at random:confused:

Thread 1 Greenhouse

I wanted to build a green house but in one of my AgriReview papers I found one within 2 hours from me. I called the guy to find out who made the house and other info. The man and his wife were selling due to health problems and the green house had never been used but was erected, 14x14 with automatic vent, exhaust fan, snow and ice upgrade, timers, thermostat, and several other extras.

I also called the maker to price a new one with everything that was included with this one and actually had looked at this one to buy new last year. The cost for new was $2000.00 plus tax and delivery. I paid $700.00 for it.

I think this thing had several thousand screws:D but it was worth it.

I have the water tank set up for the green house and as soon as I get the garden shed built later this fall I will trench electric to it and get a small electric pump for watering in the greenhouse and raised beds.

Garden/ Irrigation

Garden is doing good so far. We are going to try to sell some at the Farmer Market this year. I have two 200' rows of green beans, 165 tomatoe plants, watermelon, peas, peppers, potatoes, cucumber, cantaloupe, and a few other things planted. Most things were started in the greenhouse.

Irrigation

Pumping out of the river that borders the field. I have used 300' of 2" flat hose. TSC sells it for $1.49 a foot, my local Souther States has it for $0.75 a foot, and a guy I rent a small farm to gets it for me at $0.30 a foot.

I am using the flat hose with 2" PVC with cut offs at different points. This will make it easy to move out of the way at the end of the season and add ports where needed. I tested it this Monday at it works good with the sprinklers. However at some point I will use irrigation hose under plastic film.

I still need to add more ports and PVC/flat hose for the sprinklers instead of garden hose.

PVC sprinkler set up I will use in the rows instead of a garden hose attached to sprinklers.

Thread 3

It always worries me when my wife arrives home and calls me from the car:D.

I know she has picked up a dog, cat, turtle, or something that has been set out close to the river. (Not that anyone sets out turtles:laughing:). We have rescued several cats and dogs the last 4 years and have always found them a good home. I even keep a spare dog box.

Well this time she shows up with a black lab/ boarder collie mix. He was less then 6 months old, ribs showing, and hungry. I fed him got the dog box and said to her and my son DO NOT NAME HIM, we will find him a home.

Well to make a long story short the dog stayed with me everywhere I went. No matter what door of the house I went in, he would lay there until I came back out. After about a week I told my wiffe to take him to the vet to get check out and get the shots needed.

A couple of days later she found him a home......I said no, he is my dog now:mur:. So he has all his shots, been "fixed", and micro chipped.

Meet Bo.

Thread 4

Deer fence.

I have tried several different types of fence the past four years to keep the heard of wildebeast from eating everything in the garden. I think I have (knock on wood) found the answer.

I have the solar electric fence that helps some but deer still go through it. Two years ago I tried putting a string about knee high and 3-4' on the outside of the electric fence. I had been told by some other farmers that deer had trouble with depth perception and would not jump or go between this type set up. Well it worked and we had a great garden that year.

Last year I only planted peas for a test of the fence. I had the double fence up until the peas were about knee high. I then removed the twin on the first fence and the next day ALL the peas were eat down to the ground.

I have not seen a deer track inside the fence this year. The first time, two years ago I had two deer get in but it was during a thunder storm and they did not eat anything, just ran through.

I will try this same type of fence around the pumpkins this year with out the electric and let you know how that works.

I can't say this will work for everyone but it is working for me.
