Greenhouse/Garden and Irrigation/Dog/Deer Fence

I also got a used greenhouse this year hoophouse style 20 x 48. I got on here to see how others irrigate. My well is 300' away from the greenhouse. I have a 250 gallon water tank, I have soaker hoses, & drip irrigation starter kit. I thought I'd try all of them, but if there is a better way, maybe I'll buy the flat hose like you use. What type of pump do you get your water out of the river, is it battery operated? Would you know if 300 ft is too far to run a regular hose from my house? Would I lose too much water pressure?

Can you give me some tips on how you set up your system or have any ideas on how to help me?

I have a 5hp gas pump I bought from TSC to pump out of the river. The main use and set up is for field irrigation. However I can fill the 300 gallon tank in the back of my truck in about 5 minutes and transport to my house and fill the 1100 gallon tank ( about 4 trips).

I too am on a well and concerned about running the well dry ( 1 and a half gallon a minute, 650' deep). Once I get the garden shed built I will trench power to both the shed and greenhouse. I will buy a small electric pump to use misters in the greenhouse and run drip irrigation to the raised beds.

I assume you want to fill your tank that is 300' from the well or use drip, sprinkler, etc. I am not sure how much pressure you will lose but you can use reducers for the hose to increase the pressure. I currently do this when running sprinklers in the field. I start with 400' of 2" from the river. I then T off at 3-4 sections and reduce to 1 1/2 inch flat hose, then 1" flat hose (each 25' standard length) and then have 175 ft of 3/4" garden hose. This gives me plenty of pressure to run 4 sprinkler heads and a fire hose nozzle for hand watering at half throttle on the gas pump.

I don't know how many soakers, sprinklers, or drip you could run straight from the well but if reduced properly you should be able to run 2-3 soakers or drip hose.

thanks for your advice. You have now given me the idea to use river water and fill up my reservoir tanks instead of running my well dry. I have a cabin on the river right down the road. Do you have to filter the water or do you buy something like a garbage pump? Sorry, I'm not too well versed in this stuff.

There is a strainer/filter on the end of my intake hose to keep larger marble size rocks out. I did not buy the "garbage" pump just the standard warter pump. You can buy a filter that you put on between the pump and the intake hose but I saw no need for this.

What I do since the intake hose tends to float is tie a couple of small bricks to the end of the hose with about 1-2' of rope to allow the filter on the end of the intake to be suspended off the bottom of the river bed thereby limiting the amount of sand and small pebbles it may pull into the pump. Usually it is about knee to waist deep water where I pump out.
