Harv, the two systems are VAX/VMS Clusters. As to what I am going to do with them, well, I've already setup a training database on one, which will be used for training medical personnel from various facilities around the country once a month. Now THAT only puts a wee dent in the storage capacity. The applications (and databases) will take up around 200 gigabyte total, so it leaves a whole lot on one system, and only 70 or so gig on the other. My current plans are to replace one database set (mirror of a military hospital's database) with one from a much larger facility. This will allow testing of proposed applications against the current primary to see if it is adaptable, and or feasable. The interfacing of the various platforms is where the fun comes in. Makes a person learn a whole new language (mainly curse words...which I don't like to use)!
I have set up an FTP site for government use, to allow free transfer of 'adhocs' which are used to pull customized data output from the databases.
Time its all organized, it will use up one tremendous amount of space, BUT, there still will be room to play!
The bigger system will handle up to a 1000 users without much sweat, and it is a jewel when you have less than six users total on it!

Harv, I ONLY wish things were ported to the Open VMS O/S!!
You can load NT on the Alpha's, but you would need to change the I/O - Ethernet combo card @ $5800 a pop plus the DEC Field Engineer's fee of around $1500 each. I ain't doing it anytime soon! I can make the swap no problem, but I don't think the customer would break loose the funds for the cards! The only other way is write the programs yourself. I'm too lazy for thaaat.
Hey Chip! How's your poppa doing? Better I hope. Mine is ticked at me, cause his birthday present never got there in time for his big day. He's 86 now.
Just got the goodies to rehook up my home network. I guess my hub was not compatible with AT&T's cable modem, so they hooked the modem directly into my NIC card...bummer. Had to buy a new hub this evening, and will get it all back up and running tomorrow.
Boy, I bet you will sure be glad to get back up home! I would be an absolute raving lunitic away from my family for that long! I've had to take a few business trips and one the first was two weeks at a training class, from there on it was the family goes, or I don't! Stuck in my ways I guess. Wife loves those week long conferance deals, last one she and the son had a weeks vacation at Radison Resort in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Me? Well, someone had to pay the piper and attend those boring day long sessions!
The rest of it, what can I say? Aw shucks, and ya gotta do what ya gotta do! No drinking, but there IS some prime reading to help fill in the niches in daily living! Not preaching to anyone, but my faith is a great comfort to me.
Speaking of shagnasty 'flictions, I had to laugh when I was told the name (acronym) used for the drugs in the first treatment next week. They told me the drug portion of the treatment is called 'CHOP', which stands for a mouthfull of different drugs. There are 20 or thirty of those acronyms meaning different combinations of drugs....now I don't know if any of the others have the connotation that CHOP does, but it immediatly made me think of BALD (as in no hair, beard, etc)! Joy has grand visions of getting blackmail pictures, so I've gotta find a good hiding spot for all the cameras!
Well, gotta go for tonight, and read some more!
Later

Hi, Ho, I/O Ethernet Combo Dude...I'm holdin' the fort down this fine evening/morning so's I kin
hep ma Pa git to the gent's room if he needs to, 6-7 times this Sat. morn. My vigil is two-fold. Seems there was a guy skulkin' round the house when I was out shopping 'bout 9:eek:o 2nite. He split tootsweet when my neighbor approached thinking it was me creeping around like a LURP lookin' fer ears! Hell, this is Bel-Air...but still LA. Anyhow, gladta havva GLOCK 40 S&W with about 300rounds shot three days ago with an LAPD friend of mine. By Rat Raisins, I was getting the hang of shredding the vitals on that paper profile! It's
a bit humbling to shoot with a guy (LAPD 16 years)
who uses his Beretta to trim a target so completely. Glad he's on our side!
Sorry for the rant.
Speaking of Dads and birthday presents, mine had his yesterday the 22 Feb...88 th. I am so blessed
to be able to hoist a flagon of grog with him in the 21st Century. Not only that, but Sandee was with us as she's down here in LA-LA Land to help her Mom over at Air Force Village West in Riverside. What are kids for if they can't help their parents? I'm just grateful my folks didn't sell me to the first camel train that passed through their oasis.

Bob, I'm really glad to hear from you.
