Tractor
2003 FarmPro 2420 2WD
I am new to this website and hope to find answers to a few problems I am having with my Farmpro 2420 2WD tractor. I have the two major problems:

1. Hydraulic system no longer provides steering or 3-point hitch lift capabilities. It appears that all or most of the hydraulic fluid was blown overboard through the vent under the seat at the back of the tractor. Just prior to the complete failure I was using a bush hog mover. The bush hog fell flat to the ground when the 3-point hitch went to the full down position without me moving the control. A few moments later, the power steering stopped working even though I could continuously turn the steering wheel in either direction.

I filled the reservoir with fluid and tried to bleed the air from the line. That did not work. I drained all of the fluid and removed the cover-plate at the rear of the reservoir. I found a few pieces of rubber and some other material from the bottom area. I assume the 3-way hitch servo seals are damaged, but I have no clue how to replace them. I am retired and cannot afford to have someone else repair it. Does anyone have a step-by-step procedure on how to replace those seals? Also, I will need a part number and place to order the parts from.

2. Now since the tractor has set idle for several weeks, the clutch will not disengage. I read where I might be able to force it to disengage by pulling the tractor in a high gear with the clutch peddle pushed in, or just riving the tractor around for a while, or dropping a plow deep into the ground, or trying to engage the PTO with the bush hog attached. Right now, I am unable to experiment with any of these tricks due the hydraulic system being inop. I will work on this issue after I regain my power steering and lift capabilities.

I paid $4000 for the tractor. Around 4 weeks after I bought it, the fuel injector broke. After paying $999 for parts and labor it worked for a few months until these 2 problems surfaced. Now, my "$5000" tractor is a thorn in my side (or lower). I need to fix it so I can sell it.

Any comments?

Thanks for your help,
Joel

Ok, well the power steering is a first clue. If you developed a leak in the suction line and are sucking air thru the system this can cause you to push all the fluid out of the steering vane pump at the bottom of the steering colunm. If the steering system plumbing has fluid in it you should be able to make the front wheels steer even if the engine isnt running. A vacume leak would also aireate the fluid back into the reservoir and could cause fluid to be blown back out of the vent. Check all the fittings between the pump and the reservoir throughly for leaking. A leak on the suction side can admit a ton of air and never drip any fluid so look closely. Mine had a pipe union that came loose when new and that fouled the syste... It dosnt take much air to mess with a hydraulic system.

You need to get fluid flowing in the system air free. This can be hard to determine as the fluid passes thru the 3PH control valve and thru the sidewall of the reservoir and is very difficult to see from the vent. If it has air bubbles you will probably see those from the vent. Once you get fluid flowing without air start cycling the steering to force the air out of that system. As the air clears it will start to respond better and better.

The 3Ph control has a safety in it to both protect the lift and the pump. That could have opened if the brushhog was heavy and you bounced it. It could also be that the piston seal let go(rubber in the sump?)

Your clutch may be rusted. You may also have slop in the linkage. Chain the drawbar to something that wont move, start it in creeper gear and let the chain come tight. Once the wheels start to dig in, step on the clutch and see if it will break free... the PTO clutch is a little more difficult to load up...

Thank you for the advise Mr. Ron. I will follow your instructions and report back in a few days when I get some time to work on the tractor.

Joel
