The side port are the IN and OUT.

In the center picture, the relief valve appears to be close to the IN port which is on top in the picture.

So, this valve will not work in this system as it is now? or do I need a "T" installed in the "reservoir" line? Remembering that now, there is no "external" reservoir tank, only the cylinder acting as "self contained" reservoir.

These are suggestions, you do what you want.

You need a small reservoir for the pump to suck fluid and dump the cyl fluid.

Although the way you have it connected may work, you might try it the right way ans see if that works.

Here is how to do that. You need enough fluid to fill the lines and the cyl fully extended. In the retract mode, all the fluid will be contained in the reservoir.

The pumps out flow goes into the IN port by the relief.

The out hose from the valve goes into the reservoir/tank.

One of the work ports goes to the cyl.

The other work port tees into the reservoir line.

The cyl will retract if you have enough weight on the trailer.

The PTO pump can stay running or not.

Thanks, JJ, I'll give the "right way" a try, hehe, a friend has and older truck like mine with the same cylinder, but using no reservoir tank, but his valve is totally different. His valve mounts directly to top of pump and only has an "IN & OUT". Since our cylinders were the same, I was trying to get rid of the "tank", guess not..............................thanks again for your most helpful input!! One last question, you say" the other "work port" Tees into the reservoir line. Do you mean the other port from the cylinder and not "work port"? If not, you have not mentioned the "exit " port of the cylinder. thanks again.

The exit port is also the IN port on the cyl.

When you raise the cyl, fluid flows in, and when you lower the cyl, fluid flows out the same port.

This is what I said above.

The out hose from the valve goes into the reservoir/tank.

One of the work ports goes to the cyl.

The other work port tees into the reservoir line.

Hey JJ, need to pick your brain again. 85 C60 dump. lift cylinder has 2 ports with one port coming from "hard line" that is external and exits the cylinder from the piston end of cylinder. Am assuming "in and out"?? is this a single or double action cylinder?? both ports are at the base of the cylinder. (PTO driven, external res also...with external(seperate from pump) shuttle valve control.)(valve is only "in or out", no middle detent)

bed raises great, but 20 minutes or more to lower. valve has in/out, 2 work ports. suggest a plumbing schematic for me???

thanks,

It could be either.

A SA cyl could have one reg port and a small port for air.

A DA cyl could be used for SA by installing a vent in the other port.

A SA cyl usually has a single hose installed. Pressure up , gravity down.

One member here says he converted a SA cyl to DA.

thanks JJ, for the quick reply. sounds like I have a DA cyl. both "exit" ports at base of cylinder are 1" thread. Am I attempting to place a DA cylinder in a SA system? If so, is this possible and how to plumb?? oh yea, an after thought. this cylinder does have the "leather" seal at the top of the cylinder covering the "hole". retained by 2 bolts, almost same height of the "hard line" that comes from cylinder and routes to cylinder base where it once again enters the cylinder.

again, my humble thanks

If you want to use a DA cyl in a SA setup, then use the base port for the hyd and put a vent in the rod end port.

The problem is you need to hook a hose from your second port to the return (plug above the valve) so the pressure can release from the valves when you move the lever back.
