( Beware the Recons from VN. I always suggest getting at least 3 customer references including at least one more than 2 years old and at least one a year old. Everyone is happy at first. Search this forum and the net for recons. )
Very good advice indeed.
As a John Deere fan I did a lot of research before deciding to buy a grey.
Here is my opinion on Recon tractors from a 3rd world country as well as what I found.
Almost everybody that advertises them uses the same blurb almost word for word describing them.
Having been overseas many times in some god forsaken places I can tell you first hand that they will always do as little as possible on something like this and somebody is always running some kind of scam to make a buck and they do love the green American $$$$s
I expected nothing but a shiny paint job on an old tractor with a bunch of shiny new nuts and bolts where they are visable and a new battery as well as everything in working condition.
I looked for a model with a close US counterpart or popular models of the Yanmar, Kubota, Mitsubishi and Zen-Noh (which are either Yanmar or Kubota) that have decent parts availability.
I looked for models that I could eventually get a loader for should I decide to get one later.
Most of the horror stories I found were about cracked aluminum bellhousings or a busted front MFWD axle on some of these that were equipped with a loader or people finding MUD and rust instead of gear lube in the front axles.
I decided on a 2wd that would fit my needs and applied the KISS principle....less moving parts is less that can break.
Having been a mechanic for years I made a good inspection of the tractors mechanicals to make sure everything worked properly. I also checked for cut and spliced wiring, welds and corrosion. Remember these things were used in rice paddy's.
I expected to find a few loose nuts and bolts somewhere, a few things I didn't like and a few minor imperfections and I have. One loose nut on the 3 point, many paint imperfections and an eccesively loud exhaust.
You also may want to think about letting us know what you are planning on using it for as well as models you are considering and some of these guys here may make suggestions as to which models to look for and what to avoid. There is alot of experience on this board as well as dealers so utilize it to your advantage and make an educated decision that you won't regret.
